|
|
Common Sense always goes a long way. I know Wakeboarding is a progressive sport that requires skill and a lot of practice.
However I want to ask the Vets if they could contribute their thoughts on "what not to do list when wakeboarding" to prevent injuries, medical bills or dissapointments/discouragements of the sport.
If there was a Trick safety list to give a new person what would it be.
Meaning outisde of the PFD & Boating Regulations.
All suggestions will be appreciated. _________________ Boats run on gas, not thanks! |

Who are the vets? The vetenarians? Any way just do what Josh says, if a trick feels above your ability dont do it. You could also where a helmet to prevent injuries such as ruptured ear drum. _________________

When you're getting tired and feel like ending your run, never try that new move you are trying to learn. I've done that a few times and been injured because I was too worn out to do the move right.
I've realized that in all boardsports, one key thing to prevent injury is knowing how to wreck the right way. It's something that's instinctive, so you can't really teach it, just gotta figure out what hurts, and try to avoid doing that again. For instance, I noticed that under-rotating flips can really hurt the ankles, so anytime I know I'm gonna come down and slam my ankles, I usually turn or bend my knees enough to prevent landing hard on my ankles. This may not make sense how I'm writing it... |

When you fall from any height just try to roll into a ball. It keeps you from breaking yer back. Wear a helmet _________________ -Nunc est bibendum! |

theirs sorta an order to learn tricks to progress safeley to a point once u surpass it you can basicly learn anyway you want
first get a wake 2 wake down, then leanr some simple 180s after that unfortunatley the sport ups the anti when it comes to risk because from there you got spin 360s or go inverted _________________ They know what is what but they dono what is what they just strut. |

Thanks for your replies.
I think I got the breaking falls part down.
I also learned to chug water
This was my first real season and it was mostly behind a PWC, which I wasnt too thrilled, but it did help me get all the basics down.
I used to skateboard for about 6 years, so it wasnt that difficult.
It took me a while to get the deep water start but later found the trick since the PWC would lag during the first few seconds.
The reason I posted the question is because Im purchasing a Moomba at the end of the winter maybe sooner. Now, Im ready to go big and Im getting my self mentally prepared for the High Air.
And Ive been reading a lot on other ppls mistakes to avoid them.
I know only trial and error will show the results.
So once again thanks everybody for your time. _________________ Boats run on gas, not thanks! |

| What toothpick says is very true. I'd even take it one step further. If your feeling tired, end your run. Just about everytime I've pushed myself wanting to go on longer despite being tired, I've fallen in stupid ways, a lot of the time on tricks I have completely dialed. Most of the time its just a painful faceplant, but sometimes(like last night) it's worse. I popped wrong on a plain TS wake jump and it swung the board around, angling it perfectly to sink right in to the water. It slammed me down, knocking the wind out of me and messing up my back. Now I think I have a bruised rib because it hurts to breath, and my back is messed up enough that it hurts to stand/sit up. |

I would suggest NOT falling into a ball! From personal experience this is not a good thing! When you tuck into a ball your head is too close to your knees and there is great risk of injury to your knees and face/mouth. I was trying Raleys and wasn't gonna make it so I tucked into a ball and got a knee to the cheekbone and a nice shiner. Fortunately I didn't break the bone. A few weeks later I was trying a TS frontroll and ended up landing in a ball and my knee smacked into my chin, moving around some teeth which sliced through both lips and ripped up my gums (required 20+ stitches to clean everything up), AS WELL as tweaking my knee to the point that it still hurts from time to time now.
Like other people have said, just take your time and learn as you go. Have fun with it and don't put pressure on yourself to be landing big tricks too quickly!
Good luck in your efforts! |

| Good points, try and stay in control. If you go and throw something crazy you have no chance of landing, odds are that's when you'll end up injuring yourself. |

Basicly: like any other skill it takes progression and its sorta a fast then slow then fast curve
once u get your basic stuff u learn to jump quick but conquering a invert or 360 takes awhile and after you do you can speed through a million tricks _________________ They know what is what but they dono what is what they just strut. |

When I land, I always make sure I don't land on my nose of the board, because that will send you into a faceplant, and give you the worst fall. Keep your nose out of the water on landings. Whenever I'm unable to land I lean the opposite direction to componsate for a faceplant, sending me into a little spin around on my edge, which doesn't even get my head wet. I've definately learned to fall, that's what it's all about. Don't push yourself, and if your tired end your run, it's not worth it, you'll just get dissapointed or get hurt. In snowboarding, you must learn to fall, that means don't use your hands to stop you, and try and make the board take most of the pain on your falls, and not your head. If you get into a spin protect your head, and keep your board straight to avoid ankle sprain _________________ I'd rather be Wakeboarding.

very true, thats what purpose they serve. better to wear a helmet, than not remember where you are, or what that thing is strapped to your feet.
