I installed an old amp to power 4 new tower speakers. I had it wired with the ground and the "on" wire (don't know what its called) piggy backed off and existing 6CH amp. Power run independently. Interiors were working fine but the tower was popping so I was turning down the gain..almost all the way. All of a sudden the original AMP which was working fine started turning off then back on or going into self protect over and over which was causing my stereo to do the same thing for some reason. I un hooked the "on" wire and the other amp and the head unit will run but as soon as I hook it back up the amp keeps doing the on/off thing. Anyone know what could be causing this??? Thanks.

Scott

I dont think your amp is blown because it's still turning on and off. It does this to protect itself. Try running seperate cables all the way from the battery. The other wire is called positive or hot. Also how are you running your preamps? Not that I know if it matters but it sounds like a good question. There are some people on here that are geniuses when it comes to this stuff. Maybe one of them will help you later.

Wes,
Thanks for the response. I'm not sure I understand your comment. The power is totally separate all the way from the battery. The only thing piggy backed was the ground and the "remote on" wire.. Anyone else have any suggestions. Thanks.

You should run the negative from the battery also...or a ground block. The wire guage should be the same or bigger than the positive. The only thing I can think of for your amp coming on and off is if you have too low voltage from the battery w/ an additional amp. My stereo used to do the same thing when we listened w/ the boat turned off. Check the voltage and the connedtions....hope for the best.

Thanks guys. That's two that have told me that. I will try it when I get home today. Man, I thought I blew it up. Lemme ask one more question. The ground for the DHD amp is run from the block. I just piggy backed it so I didn't have to run that wire under the boat deck back to the engine. I've heard that is ok. Is it?
