I get to get an ACL reconstruction on 2/21/03 and my meniscus will be repaired as me as my ICL and my ECL. The best part is no fun stuff for 8 months. I hate my damn knee I did it back in August and they finally got around to it just now. Sad Sad Sad Sad

thats crazy man. I tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus August 10th and, I had an MRI done and I had surgery scheduled for August 19th. I have no idea how you waited so long. I was told to only be off my knee wakeboarding for 6 months (the doctor's son competes with me so he knows what he's talking about). I'd be very mad that the doctors didn't get it until now. Your knee can start healing wrong which can mess you up even more. Was it the doctor's decision to wait or yours?

I wanted to try PT first and I just keep reinjuring it. The extra 2 months was due to lack of operating room time for the Dr. that I wanted to do it. I guess it is not the best idea to operate so soon after injury

Why try PT first? All it does is strengthen the muscles around your knee. It does absolutely nothing for your torn ACL. And PT actually hurts your meniscus even more. I thought it was a very good idea to operate as soon as I injured it. I got my ACL fixed and now I will be able to ride this season. Plus, I had the operation done a week before school started so I could start college on time.

The reason for PT is precisely to strengthten all your muscles in your leg. There is this little problem called atrophy after you have knee surgery and that causes all your muscles to diminish. The stronger they are before surgery, the less overall affect the atrophy will have.

Any decent orthopedic surgeon will strongly recommend PT before surgery as well as 6 months of PT after surgery. I had my ACL reconstructed back in 98, and I haven't had a single problem since I did my 6 months of PT religiously. I wakeboard, snowboard, mt bike, lift weights, and run among other things and I don't even notice that my ACL is new. I also never used a brace of any kind.

My advice is really do the PT after the surgery or it will just delay your recovery.

You can run around with a torn acl, if you have strong muscles supporting it, there are people that do it. I have a friend that did it. Some people chose not to go under the knife.
