Some places will let you go by yourself your first jump if you do it on a static line. That's what I did, I also did a tandem jump so I could experiance free fall as well. I really wish I could have just gone by myself with the freefall. I think the place that I went to requires 5 static line jumps before you get to "freefall." On your first freefall jump you have to pull it right away, so you don't really get to freefall. On subsequent jumps you pull it at 5 sec, 10 sec, etc... It takes quite a lot of jumps before you can freefall for a sig. amount of time. I figured the cheapest way for me to go by myself and experiance freefall was to do one tandem and one static line by myself. The static line by myself was actually more of a rush, the tandem jump felt more like an amusment park ride.

Hell ya do it! I was Airborone in the Army and have since gone on to doing a few jumps here and there. I would go tandem instead if static if you have the opportunity. The freefall is the best part, see if they will let you pull the cord at around 7500, that should give just enough time to get a nice free fall going.

| It's one of the coolest things I've everr done! (I'd still take a day at the lake though.) THe place I went to let me jump first time solo with no static line! I just had to ask like 3 or 4 times. There were two instuctors by my side for freefall but it was still amazing! I actually liked when the parachute came out the most becasue it felt like I grew a pair of wings. My Dad had done it a few times before but landed on his butt. I was making fun of him and he told me he'd give me $50 if I landed on my feet. I was $50 richer at the end of that day! Criminal, you're up so high and things are so surreal that it's not that scary. Just do it!

Does the static line automatically open up at a certain altitude. I've been taking flying lessons for like a year now. I want to jump out of an airplane, my only worry would be if it didn't open, but then again I wouldn't have to worry if that happened.

brad- a static line releases the chute the second you jump out of the plane. Also what kind of flying lessons are you taking? private single engine? IFR?
a lot of my friends have gotten their pilots liscences and ifr ratings and now some of them are moving on the multi engine. i was thinking about it but one ofe my friends just died form crashing his twin engine aztec in arizona.

I want to do it, but hubby won't let me until we get life insurance on me. I had a cousin who was a professional sky diver. He was the guy with the camera mounted to his head filming people on the way down. He also loved base jumping, which is why he's no longer with us.
He had over 500 base jumps under his belt when he scaled a huge water tower in FL under a full moon for his last jump ever. It's illegal to jump off radio and water towers, that's why he did it at night. Anyway, something went wrong and they found him 3 days later tangled up in a tree, shoot open. Nobody will ever know what happened.
We had a memorial service for him at the local sky diving school. His brother, along with my 2 brothers, did a memorial sky dive and spread his ashes on the way down. It was pretty cool. Made me want to do at least one jump in his honor. Hope I'm not depressing anyone, just wanted to share his story. He lived for "jumping out of perfectly good planes". I've never known a happier more fulfilled person than my cousin, Bobby was.

Wes:
I'm almost done with my private, I've just really really really procrastinated the last year. I'm flying a Cessna 152 right now, I'm hoping to have my instrument done by July. Sorry to hear about your friend, accidents happen. You should give it a try and see how you like it.
Later,
Brad

Work is paying for it, but I doubt they will let me go solo, tandem will be the order of the day I'm sure.
Well, looks like I better put my name down then!

Well, after an extended delay getting this thing organised, it's happening on the 13th (Sunday). I am diving to raise charity for Cerebal Palsy Australia. I'll be booting up to Skwakes house on friday night after work, probably riding Saturday, and diving sunday before driving back down.
I'll let you know the colour of my Jeans on Monday

If you want advice about skydiving email bigairnut. He has made like 100's of jumps and I think used to be a partner in a skydiving company.

Well, after the delays and the pissing around and the disorganisation, I will present a rundown of my weekend.
Awoke 8:00 on saturday, drove to launceston (2 hours), hung out with Skwake, went out for a few drinks on saturday night, at 3am on sunday morning we decided it wasn't worth going to bed when we had to be up at 6:30 for the jump, so we pulled an all nighter. At 6:45 I jumped in the shower to freshen up, I got out and Hello, there is a message on my phone. I checked the messages and guess what, the BLOODY JUMP HAD BEEN CANCELLED!!
So I drove back to Hobart via the coast (4 hours) and went out for a while until about 11pm. So I finally got to sleep after 39 hours, and I am still a skydive virgin.
This sucks
They are rescheduling for some time next month... what a crock. Damn weather.

That sucks... Sorry things didn't work out. Gotta love the sleep deprivation though. We drank till 5am for the last 3 days. Seriously though, senior year in college and you have to make some memories.
