| holy crap, when the shuttle landed or blew up or whatever went wrong, my entire house was shaking......you could feel it in the ground, I'm about 2 hours from where they think it came down.....I thought it was a quake, we have fault lines in TX, but they generally don't move....I was in 7th grade when we lost the last one.....sad |

| They are blowing this way out of proportion. Especially with the Jewish Guy. Everyday 120 people die in car accidents. Where are the bleeding hearts for them? |

heliboy do YOU know how much space shuttles cost to make? wanna know where they get their funds to make them? NASA is a very high profile organization so when anything goes wrong people will know about it.
"Every day 120 people die in car accidents." obviously people dying in car accidents is an everyday occurence, but people dying in a space shuttle (let alone going into outerspace) isnt. |

| Yea like the US cares about money... If we did we would work to pay off the national debt. But when it comes down to it money is money to the government. |

Astronauts are scientists in my mind. The only thing that bothers me about it is Bush. He has some nerve, and I can't beleive that people put up and go along with his BS. He even called them heros, nothing to degrade them, but come on. What does he even have anything to do with it anyway? Did he care about nasa last night?

I seems weird they spent all this money getting to the moon, and then nobody has been up there for like 20 years or something.
It would be great if they were doing things to improve life here on earth or perhaps expanding our horizons (which they are doing, I suppose), but some of the experiments are just.... stupid. They currently have 8 spiders up there spinning webs, to see if they can do it in zero G.
Considering the cost per pound of weight it is to send things up, does it seem worth it?
What about the space elevator? That idea just seems queer..... _________________ Terminate high thinking |

I can't believe most of the last posts! Are you guys really that ignorant? Heliboy, if it's not your thing then fine but don't be so retarded as to say it's being blown out of proportion! Do you have any idea what the shuttle program is as a national symbol? Or means to someone who cares about space and exploration? Obviously not. The shuttle is a monument to humanity and what we can accomplish!!!! It is amazing to see what we can do and it gives us hope for our future. And that's just the technological side. Our astronauts are some of our greatest explorers of today. Sure, it may seem routine but some of us actually care and knew the shuttle was up there. I didn't know all the crew or much about them but I knew Husband was Mission Comander, McCool was the pilot, and the first Israeli, Ilan, was going up. Husband tried and was denied four times to enter the astronaut corp. Anything noteworthy in that!?! They're human. Go read the Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe if you want an idea of how linked the American people really are to the Astronauts. And I'll admit that Bush hasn't treated NASA well but who hasn't neglected something or someone only to realize how good once it was gone? As our national leader he 100% has the right to call them heroes! And the speach he gave today was probably the most beautiful and eloquent speaches a President has ever made.
If you find no attachment to NASA, mankind's history of space travel, and the Columbia tragedy of today then I only pity you for missing history as it is made. |

| i think it's traggic that it happened and i feel sorry for the family's of the people that are gone. i feel the same way as most people do about what happened today. i just dont think the benefits outweigh the costs of space exploration. when are we ever going to apply anything that we learn in space to anything other than space? i just think it's pointless that we keep spending money on it right now when there are obviously better things to spend the money on. |

i really agree with you king of the tigers.....space has always been one of the great mysteries....do any of us know the future or what it holds for the NASA because something might happen that might revolutionize the space program again. the space program was kennedy's dream, and it was met when we went to the moon. so why not keep it going, and conquer more things that are ahead of us. the space program is a part of the AMERICAN DREAM for some. and about our money issue...you realize that money is not a problem in the US b/c the govt can print however much money it wants....i mean yeah our national debt is a big concern, but what is it doin to our economy....our economy is sluggish b/c of the possible war, people not spending, and so on....well thats my input on that....later.
ALL OR NOTHING.....plus its only water |

i understand the initial cause of space exploration and i think going to the moon was worthwhile too. but why do stupid stuff like see if spiders can spin a web without gravity?
printing more money just causes inflation it doesnt make the u.s. have any more value.
btw where are you in tx? |

| Wes, spiders' webs are far stronger (in comparison) and more flexible than any man made rope or cable type materials. Scientists are really looking into web technology right now to see if we could duplicate it on a larger scale. I think sending spiders into orbit goes farther than "Gee, wonder if they can do that?" |

its hard to believe that someone actually wrote some of the post on this thread.....kids......There are pieces of it 1/2 mile from my house, and body parts, and one of their helmets found locally, people will be finding parts of it for years to come......
I still can't believe that some of you have the "whats the big deal?" attitude....thats whats wrong with our country |

I was in one of my high school classes watching the Challenger when it blew up in 1986. I was driving down I-20 on a wakeboarding trip Saturday when I heard about the latest explosion. These people are heroes because they knew the risks and went into space anyway. If somebody runs over you in traffic, you're not a hero, you're an innocent victim.
I've been reading the previous replies from people who I hope are all just kids. I can't fathom an adult asking such completely stupid questions as "when are we ever going to apply anything that we learn in space to anything other than space?"
How about this thing called a computer that you are using to view the internet? How about your calculator that helps make algebra class so much easier? How about the titanium exhaust on sportbikes and other exotic materials that were developed partly or fully because they were needed for the space program? On this latest mission, they were doing experiments with zero gravity micro flames in the hope that their findings would help engineers on earth design engines with better burn characteristics and lower emissions!
Don't any of you read????? _________________ fropappy |

| I'm not saying I don't feel bad for them I'm just saying it is stupid the way the news is hyping it up. Who cares. In my mind we should find out what happened and move on. Keep it in perspective. It there was a 3 car pile-up on the turnpike and 10 people were killed they would talk about it for 5 minutes and drop it. Where is the sympathy for those families? The only reason NASA exists is to keep the USA on top of the game. That is the only reason it has ever existed. Not because we want to "learn the mysteries of space" but because we don't want someone to know more then we do. |

I guess we haven't met engineering standards, (meaning the rocket wasn't suited for this) I feel bad in all for the families, but if the people up in the shuttle didn't know what they're doing or did something wrong, we should give the next people more training so this won't happen _________________ ...Wahoo!
