the final results of he exams are a torn meniscus and possible torn ACL... that's it... my snowboard season is over... the surgery will take place in a couple of weeks... first of all to fix the torn meniscus and to see if my ACL is really damaged... if it's not, I'll be riding this summer... if it is, it'll be a long time before I ride a wakeboard again... all this since a bad landing on a tantrum this summer... our health system sucks here in Canada...

as soon as I get to ride again, I don't care... It's still not that bad right now... it doesn't hurt anymore... I can ride on a snowboard as soon as I don't do something stupid... me knee just keeps on dislocating when I crouch down too far... my only hope is that my ACL asn't been touched... the recovery from arthroscopic surgery is about a couple of weeks... but for an ACL reconstruction surgery... I don't even want to think about it...

it will be alright man. last august i tore my acl, mcl, and meniscus. I'll be able to board in March. The meniscus will take only about 6 weeks to heal after surgery. If the acl is torn, look at 6 months. Hope everything is alright.

My brother tore both ACLs and one MCL. I doesn't seem to slow him down, but he does wear his knee braces. He looks like he has bionic legs with both braces on.

Hit the Rehab hard and be sure not to over work the damage knee and neglect your healthy knee. The doctors for his second surgery said that actually helped influence his second tear. He rehabbed knee was noticably larger and physically fit than the healthy knee!

My friend tore his ACL and MCL in August. He is still in rehab for it. The Doc says he should be ok by summer.

Sorry to hear that. A kid i know tor his ACL skiing (snow, lol) and has to get reconstructive surgery, he will be out for a few years, which sucks when your getting paid. There are some expensive, insane knee braces that you can have a torn ACL and still ski (snow) with, you should check it out.

I am going in tomorrow to see what the the ortho says about my knee. I messed it up riding in december and I still cant walk down stairs properly. My regular doc thinks its just the meniscus. I hope so!!!! Good luck to your rehab, I can feel your pain(literally) Sad

That's what I was wondering... after an MRI, they should be able to tell if my ACL is torn or not... but they'll see it during the arthroscopic surgery... good luck jim... I hope it's only the meniscus... as I heard, the arthroscopic surgery takes only 2 or 3 weeks to heal so it's not that bad... that's what I'll go through in a couple of weeks... if you want, I can give you some feedback on how it went after the surgery... and yeah I know there is some knee brace that I will be using if my ACL is damaged but not torn... but I'm waiting to get a prescription from my ortho after the surgery... that way it wont cost a thing... the insurance will take care of it...

I cant believe how common these knee injuries are in this sport. Damn, I thought football was dangerous!!! Today I went to the ortho (loser) the guy was too lazy to do an MRI or Xray, just gave me a shot of cortizone and sent me on my way. Anyone know of a good orthopedic in SLC??? Mad

I tore my meniscus on a 5, surgery is in a couple weeks. A lot of people get hurt wakeboarding but it's far less painfull then snowboarding.

If you know that you're going to have surgery then start working out your legs now to get them into the best shape that you can (without making the injury worse obviously). It will really make a difference in the rehab if your leg is strong before the surgery. After the surgery make sure you do the physical therapy religiously and it will really make a difference.

A couple of my friends had to have ACL reconstruction and they are all doing fine now - back snowboarding, wakeboarding, bmx and motorcycle riding. But all of them really put a lot of work into it before and after the surgery.

Good luck!

What dynamic is occuring that causes tears to the ACL/MCL and/or the meniscus? Is a common factor that one foot comes out of the binding? Or are these types of knee injuries occuring even if the bindings hold?

I think Charley Patterson has got it right. I'm buying longer board shorts, though. This sport is way too fun to lose because I was afraid I wouldn't look "cool".

In fact, any enterprising soul out there may want to make a nice looking set of effective knee braces designed for wakeboarders (like our impact vests). We're sort of stuck, now, with what athletes from other sports are using. Wakeboarding is still way evolving. We'll just consider the braces PFD's for our knees. I mean we don't feel "wierd" wearing our life vests!

Additionally, somebody needs to develop a "soft landing" wakeboard/ binding combo since I think it's the constant pounding from repeated landings that wears down the ligaments and then an innocuous fall does the final tear. Balsa with a softer foot pad helps; maybe there's more.

after arthroscopic surgery, the diagnosis is no damadge to the meniscus... that is the good part... but a ruptured ACL... that's the bad part... the reconstruction is not for a near future... I guess I'll be riding with a knee brace this summer and for a couple of summer in a row... don joy will be my choice cus that's is the only one that is cover by the provicial helth insurance here...

I've known many people that have torn their ACL, I think it is pretty easy...

One playing football, no contact with other people or ground, he just changed direction quickly

One playing tennis, same thing

One playing soccer, same thing

One skiing, bad fall twisted leg

One that fell off a stool

It scares me knowing people have done it just running and changing direction quickly. 4 of the 5 had the surgery using a cadeaver's(sp) parts, all recovered. The one that didn't actually came wakeboarding with us last season.
