| i can go back-hansprings & tucks. lay-outs are hopeful for the future. i've been a gymnast longer than i have been a cheerleader. when i quit like gymnastics classes i was on level 6, but i still take "cheer-nastics" which is tumbling once a week |

a sport is defined as: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
a second definition of a sport is: An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
both of which apply to cheerleading |

and also...we have a cheerleading program at our gym and we are all friends w/ them and stuff but last year the gymnastics team went to one of the little cheer comp. things just to show them up. we had never cheered before in our lives but we took 1st in the whole thing. _________________ "I was born to love you,

well fine. gymnstics is your thing. great. but cheerleading is my thing. if you were to combine the time that i spend practicing, working out, or cheering at the games twice/three times a week it more than equals your 28 hours. i work my ass off at cheerleading practice. every day when i come home, my muscles are sore because i hold a 130lbs person above my head. hell i bench 130 at the gym easily and i still have trouble doing this at practice. the risk of injury is going to be high in any sport. its a risk that you have to be willing to take when you play any sport. it just pisses me off that u think that its so easy because hell, its by far the most demanding sport i've ever done.
here's a report from USA Today:
Forget the American archetype of blond cheerleader in tight sweater pining for the muscled quarterback. The world of cheer no longer means sideline squads that exist solely to support other teams.
They are teams in their own right these days, not so different in some respects from the football and basketball teams for which they traditionally cheer. College and high school cheerleaders compete for national championships. They risk terrible injury. They get recruited for college scholarships. And, in some cases, they put in more practice hours than the football team. If that sounds like the world turned upside down, consider this: In 2001, Varsity Spirit Corp. sold its Riddell Group Division, a leading maker of football helmets.
"Football is not growing," says Jeffrey Webb, president and CEO. "Cheerleading is. We looked at it and decided we were better off alone."
You can argue whether cheerleading is a sport — as many as 20 state high school organizations say it is — but not whether it is a business. Shout this into the nearest megaphone: Cheerleading, that uniquely American exemplar of earnest enthusiasm, is now an industry. |

aubs- for real i have nothing against cheerleaders so don't get all mad. comp. cheerleading is alright i guess but my theory is...wouldnt you rather be cheered for then cheer for someone else? but thats cool. i know alot of girls that put alot into cheering and they're really cool. _________________ "I was born to love you,

it just bothers me when people say its easy because hell.. its not
heres another post from USA Today:
The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research says cheerleading leads to more serious injuries to women than traditional sports such as gymnastics and track.
Jim Lord, executive director of the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisers, says about half the cheerleaders with serious injuries cited by the study later recovered. He says of the 21,000 estimated emergency room visits for cheerleaders in 1999, about 99% were treated and released. "In football you have helmets and pads," he says. "Cheerleaders do their stunts on hardwood floors or turf. We consider that risk without reason." |

i can see where your coming from because gymnastics is another sport that people say isn't a sport. but it's just hard for me to see how hard it is when the first time i have ever done it we took first in the state. but i guess when you have been dancing and tumbling around your whole life it isn't that big of a transition. _________________ "I was born to love you,

Dang Aubs I guess that it is national hate cheerleader night. Well I know where you are coming form and I feel the same way you do. Everyone thinks cheerleading is so easy. If they only know. It takes up so much of your time! Cheer is a very physical and demanding sport!!! Guess I will have to wait for tomorrow for this to get exciting again!

OOOMMMGG!! i really don't see how it can be so hard! a sport..maybe. but physically demanding? i don't know. the only thing i can see would be vocally demanding! and the only reason you can get hurt in it is if you drop someone from a lift, and that is really hard to do unless you aren't paying attention or something! does anyone agree w/ me??! ACTUALLY....this is really dumb...we are fighting about cheerleading! w/e i said it doesnt really matter because you're gonna believe your thing and i'm gonna think mine and that's cool. so peace! _________________ "I was born to love you,

ka ~ it seems like no-one agrees with you. unless u've been cheerleading as long and as hard as split & i have, u under-estimate how hard it is. falling from a stunt is alot easier than u think it is. their lives depend on the people below them.
