I just got the 2004 byerly 137 biolite with the jib base and here is what i thought. i've had two pulls on it so far. first with the center fin and second without the center fin. I thought i had the wrong board my first run. the board was way too grabby for my tastes. i prefer a really loose feeling board and with the center fin, the byerly just wouldn't break free. I couldn't lipslide the wake or do my normal nose manual slide that i usually dowithout the fin catching. second run i took the fins off the center of the board and it rode completely different. it rode how i felt it should. lipslides, and nose slides were easy and stable. toeside lipslides were easier than ever before for me. As for cutting to the wake, no other board i've tried can track and hold an edge like the byerly. i went from being disapointed to extremely happy with the board just by removing the center fins. the byerly has quite a bit of rocker so when lipsliding and buttersliding, the molded in fins and the notches are both out of the water so there is very little drag. this board has amazing pop off the wake yet it is still very consistant every time you hit the wake. the board spins really easy probably because of the reduced swing weight created by the notches in the tip and tail. the notches create a flow of water over the top of the tip and tail while riding straight. this almost creates a suction to the water. when you put the board on edge the notches act as fins(similar to the parks angled fins but more so) it is a really quick responding board. when i wanted to cut, it would cut...and hard too. i would guess that this would be perfect for people with a really hard cut who don't mind landing in the flats. even though it is only a 137, it rode like a 142. very soft on the landings, a must for someone with bad knees like me. i don't see any problems with the notches cutting the rider while doing grabs. they are not any sharper than any other board i've ridden. as for the bindings. if you hate the pain in the ass parks, to tight, lube wasting bindings, then you will love these. they are easy to get into and out of without lube. when you turn the knob to tighten them they really crank down. i had a little heellift but i personally like a slightly floaty feeling like i am skateboarding. ankles and calves had plenty of support and were perfectly tight. on one fall i did have the binding release knob open on me, causing 1 foot to come out of the binding. i don't know if this will continue to be a problem or not. if it is, then back to hyperlite they go. my review is my personal opinion and i am in no way, shape, or form, affiliated with hyperlite. my review is not bias and is based on comparison to double up, obrien, and other hyperlite boards that i have recently ridden. i think that the board is definatly worth the price and the bindings as well. once again hyperlite raises the bar by R&D. any questions, post them or e-mail me. in conclusion i would say demo it first, if you like it buy it.

very different. it sits deeper in the water when cutting than last years does because of the notches. also holds to the water better when riding straight. i found that if i put all my on my back foot, i could actually manual the front up about a foot and a half.

don't be a hyperlite hater. i rode obrien and double up until now. i actually think that i like the byerly board is better. the notches make a huge difference. i can ollie higher than i used to because of the rocker. the water flow doesn't keep you from jumping, just keeps you from skipping around on the chop. the notches allow the board to sit deeper in the water while on edge. simple as that.

Phasers are dope! I can do surface 720s like nothing, and it's seriously all about surface tricks. Sh!+, I can't even believe you would question the importance of the phaser.....

I have a question, how much more rocker is on this byerly than the byerly's of years past? Is it that much more that it would really affect your ollie? From my experience, it is about how you ollie and not how much rocker is on your board. Up until this past summer I was still riding the first trip and that thing had a flat, continuous rocker (about 2.2 inches) and I could ollie about three feet on that thing.

2000 Byerly 137 = 2.8" rocker
2003 Byerly 137 = 2.6" rocker

2000 Byerly 142 = 3.1" rocker
2003 Byerly 142 = 2.8" rocker

The 2000 Byerly 142 Limited Edition was the BEST Byerly I've ever ridden. I haven't ridden the '04 version yet, but when I do, if you guys are interested in another opinion, I'll give you mine. I'll probably ride it tomorrow, if I go out, and more importantly, if it's cool w/ otiswunguy.

I bet you could ollie even a foot higher if you had bought that Drifter from a couple of seasons back. You know the one with the growth on either end of it.

2000 Byerly 137 is the best Byerly I've ridden. They got it right that year.

i just ripped the overlays on my byerly bindings 2003, and the wire thing keeps popping out, but its straight i guess, there comfy. that newbyerly board has gimmick written all over it, why in the world would you want or need that? it does not affect anything except how the board locks down during edging, im not even sure how it works, your rail is alrady under water when you edge so what is a chunk missing out of that rail going to do? nothing honestly. im callin bs/gimmick

chubby, im sure people thought twin tip boards were a gimmick too. i think the tricks may act like a hydrofoil symilar to the wedge which pulls your edge further down into the water and locks it in place.

chubby that changes the waterflow not AROUND the board but actually THROUGH the board because of the cutouts, with a waterflow going through the board the edge will want to hold for as long as possible

how about manuals on the water also. hmmmm? i just rode last years byerly after riding the 2004 for a few days and i can say that it rides like a completely different board. i really like both of them. landed three new wake tricks since i've been riding them, and a few new boardslides also. i really like the jib base on pvc. ITS NOT A GIMMICK! the cutouts are kinda sharp and the 2004 is definately not a slider board. it will break the side fins where the notches are.

I can't believe it, after my last post I came back to download the pics and they were gone!

Shoot me the pics of the board when you get a chance.

Pat must be on the prowl.
