I just dont exactly understand what is going on in it. I am left foot forward. I think of it as hitting the wake with a really hard cut and kind of leaning backwords after the pop bring you around like a backwords summersault.(would it be compared to a wildcat in snowboarding?) Either that or its the complete opposite where you do a frontwards cartwheel and then i would be confused as to the name of a backroll. Please explain exactly what it is that is happening in a backroll.

I have been trying tantrums recently as they seem like a very easy technical trick. I can get all the way around and land back on my boardi n a crouched position, even though i dont really expect to get this far i always seem to. After i land i slip out and i have no idea why i am doing this. Some help would be aprreciated on BOTH of these questions.

Have you checked out the trick tips section of this site? There is an explanation and video of a back roll.

alexvpick, Think of a backroll as a "gainer" off the diving board. Forward motion, backwards rotation.

My approach:

medium cut (15 feet'ish) with slightly more weight on my front foot and as I'm rising up the wake, drive the nose of the board away from the boat and hang on.

the backroll just basically happens and you don't have to think about it too much. if you take a medium cut and edge throw the wake and look up and over your lead shoulder while pushing the board up and away you should rotate easy with time to spot the landing.

the tantrum,
it sounds like you may not be waiting long enough for the pop or throwing the trick out instead of up. both these inverts or more relaxed than others so wait for the pop and you should be able to rotate slow and spot the landing.
do you know the mechanics of the tantrum cut?

It seems to me that TANTRUM takes a CUTTING OUT WIDE approach while backroll only takes a 15 ft. cut approach? When you cut out wide, you build up more speed and I presume it is more for moves like the RALEY or TANTRUM but a medium cut is for backroll?

How much cut should it be for wake 2 wake jumps? My friends said at first, I should just cut out super wide to let the boat's speed pull you across. When I get the hang of it, I don't have to cut as hard. Is that true?

Thanks alot for all the advice guys. So to me the backroll, from what i understand so far, is going straight back like a summersault, but you guys always say look over your leed shoulder but you also say to lean backwards so what direction is the rotation? From what I understand its like a backwards summersault going tip over tail. About the tantrum, il try doing the waiting for the pop more next time and see if that works. My approach is like cut in really hard and let go with my back hand about 3 feet before i become airborn and ease up on my cut a bit. After this i become parralel with the wake and look backwards whitch throws me around and i almost always land back on my board I just can never seem to stick it cuz i either fall forwards or backwards. Il try to take some video footage of the next time I go out so that I can show you exactly what im doing and you guys can better help me.

try to lock your eyes on the water ... that should help u fall straight down onto the water outta your tantrum ... it orientates u and slows your rotation ... so then once your outta the rotation then just land it like a mormal w2w h\s jump
