does anyone on here do whirly's? i want to really bad. i can do a tantrum and i can also do a whirly on the trampoline. should i learn a tantrum to blind first. i am afraid of a whirly because of the line tension. am i gonna go up and throw the flip then the spin and just get stalled out and land on my back since i can get my arm over my head cause the boat is pulling my arm forward. help? oh yea can i try one on a wakeskate first? or do i have to just go for it? _________________ i know less than half of you less than half as i should like,

cool, can you do a tantrum to blind wakeboarder 360? my real question is how do you get the slack in the line to get the handle over your head? well thanx _________________ i know less than half of you less than half as i should like,

| higher education says to pull with both of your hands at take off and get your bicept in front of your eyes. no i can't tantrum to blind but i didn't try it yet. I don't think a tantrum to blind would help much with a whirly. |

Ah, I finally came across this post. Funny thing is that I have a stiff neck from over-rotating a whirly this morning off the double up.
Okay boys, here we go, I'll tell you how I learned mine:
I practiced doing some tantrums with throwing them as straight up as I could. I used to always do them high speed and into the flats, so I worked on cutting in more mellow and taking it wake to wake. On those tantrums, I held the handle not up by my head yet, but just with my arm locked in a 90º position without moving through the whole tantrum.
(don't worry about getting those perfect, I did so many tantrums that I got all tired )
So, it's surprising, but all it takes to start the rotation is handle placement and looking away from the boat. For the handle placement, you want to try to hold your arm in that same right angle I mentioned before, but up higher (elbow level with shoulder) and try to put the handle across your face and on your other shoulder. You won't actually put the handle on that shoulder, but if you try to touch your other shoulder, that will rotate you correctly.
At the same time you do that with the handle, look the same way with your head (I forget to do this sometimes and it makes me rotate slower and not spot the water as easy).
Oh, one final thing that Kyle Schmidt told me, is that you actually pop more like an ollie (coming off your back foot last) than a normal tantrum, almost like a front flip. This helps ease the line tension because it gets your body closer to the boat, which is where it goes for the rotation.
So cut in thinking nice tall wake to wake tantrum, come off the wake straight up, then move the handle over and look that way (do realize that you aren't going straight upside down, but in line with the rope, check my profile pic). It will pull you back out of it for the landing. Just get ready to hold on and ride away! |

| Oh, and I haven't landed a tantrum to blind either. It's so different that it doesn't really apply here. I also have never pulled in like that says, I don't know if that would help or not. |

Ah, wakedave375, I just read your "Hey Toothpick" post. I was surprised how close I came the first times I tried the whirly. No pain on those wrecks. I was wrecking by hitting the water with my momentum still rotating me or under rotating just a bit. Most of the time coming close to landing, but with the handle popping out of my hand.
So don't worry about the wrecks at all. And from my experience this morning, make sure that you take double up whirly's even more straight up, otherwise you will over rotate and crash all whiplash style. |

When I learned them, one day everything just felt right. Setting was perfect etc etc etc... Ive always done big laid out tannys cause id just rather do things out in the flats. That last thing I wanted was to come up short so I learned my whirlys with a raley cut. Once you get used to them with the really hard edge youll get stretched out and it feels Oh so good . _________________ http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=16993 one of few trips i got to make to the lake this year |

| thanks toothpick, i'll try that next time i'm out. When i left the wake my front arm was all straightened and i think i wasn't getting the handle near my other shoulder and bringing the handle to low. how many attempts did it take for you to get it? |

cool thanx so much toothpick. that makes me want one so bad. so one more time you can always get the rope over your head? does it feel like one on the trampoline or do you have to work at getting the rope slack enough to rotate over your head. well again thanx so much toothpick you have by far the best explanation out of anyone i have ever heard. _________________ i know less than half of you less than half as i should like,

It kind of feels like it on the tramp, but I don't think that really helped me too much. It may have helped my orientation a bit.
You really don't have to try too hard to get the handle in the right place, just commit when you do it and you'll be fine.
Good Luck! Post when you land it. |
