So, I've always had issues with getting a clean burn in my smoker. To remedy that, I've typically propped my firebox lid open. After some feedback from some smoker gurus, I tried a burn with experimenting opening the firebox door a bit. That, coupled with a new grate for holding the wood seems to have done the trick. I also decided to add a full baffle (I had a plate just leaning over the hole on that side) and experiment with tuning plates. I also added dual thermometers.
The fire burned well and burned clean.
I started off without the tuning plates, and let everything settle in to see the temperature difference from side to side. At around 275on the right, the left was around 375. I added the tuning plates and played around with them a bit, which got the temperature difference down to 20-30 degrees.
Some pics of the fire, set up and temp gauges.

Oh, and cooked up some burgers on the Weber while I was working with the smoker.
