WSJ reporting train doing 100mph in a 55 zone {cue Sammy Hagar}.
So here's my short odds board:
10/1: Broken Train
7/1: Driver watching porn
5/1: Driver playing Candy Crush
3/1: Driver Asleep
2/1: Driver Texting _________________

I'll put $10 on driver asleep.
If the Amtrak employees are unionized, I'll put another $10 on the union blaming the train or track (broken train).
You'd have to be pretty caught up in texting to miss a 45mph train speed reduction (assuming there was a 100mph speed zone before). It has to take a while to scrub that much speed on a train. |

Falling asleep would be a long shot. I'd be surprised if there wasn't some sort of "dead man switch" for the operator. When I used to be on a design team for track-bound machines, that was a requirement for many railroads.

maybe it's too close to the lufthansa crash, but when i heard 106mph in a 50mph zone and late braking in the turn, my thoughts went to intentional. |

If that is the case, the operator sucks at suicide because he is alive and well.
He lawyered up immediately, although that is to be expected. His lawyer claims he has no recollection of the moments before the crash, only during.
I think the "asleep" take is getting more likely. Even if there was a kill switch, I think it could be plausible that he still had his foot on it (assuming it is a foot switch). _________________

The requirements I saw from various railroads usually required periodic cycling of the deadman switch, like every 15 seconds. Once it goes beyond that, a very loud alarm goes off in the cab followed by reducing power to the drive line followed by application of the brakes. |

fish6942, Interesting. So if they have to cycle that often, sleeping really would not be a possibility.
If that is true, it could suggest this dude blacked out due to some unknown medical issue or was completely distracted by screwing off doing other sh1t. If I had to guess, I'd definitely choose the latter. _________________

I'm still going to say sleep. If the motions for cycling the deadman switch are simple and repetitive, they can probably be accomplished with less than full consciousness. |

I think you should add it being an intentional game of chicken with the corner. I think he has been doing it for years and he finally went too far. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |
