The pedaling type.

I'm looking at getting a bike to ride to stay in better shape.

I'm not looking for anything expensive, but I don't want any junk either. Just looking for a good quality bike without breaking the bank. I know a lot of you guys ride, or did ride so I figured I would use the all mighty wisdom of wakeboarder.com

Also any suggestions on where to buy from online for the best deals?

Thanks

FYI I know basically nothing about them. The last time I rode a bike was my Mongoose "bmx" bike as a kid doing sweet jumps and wheelies Laughing Laughing

Why type of riding?

I don’t know about buying online, unless you know exactly what you want and can build it/fit it. I’m not sure the savings would be worth the cost to ship and have it built & fit, though I guess it is possible.

May be worth scouring your local craigslist/classifieds to find something that fits, see if you get into it and then buy something else.

If you have a few local shops, I’d spend a chunk of time talking with them & riding different bikes, see what you think. Some of that is dependent if you run into some cool people, sometimes bike shops can be quite a crapshoot as far as the employees. Some are super positive and just excited to get you into something that will work for you, others….well, not so much.

Haven't bought a bike for years, but love riding, both on the dirt and road. They are two very different rides, not meaning the obvious terrain aspect of it, but the mental is 100% different as well for me.

It would be mostly street riding, but I may hit a trail every once in a while. I'd like a bike that could do both?

So with that, I'd probably go ride some MTN bikes(hardtail), "urban bikes" and some cyclocross(maybe a great choice, depending on what your idea of a trail is) bikes and see what catches your fancy. That will allow you to get a good idea as far as sizing. In the end, if you don't like riding your bike, you wont ride it. Find something that makes you smile to ride it.

Then look at craigslist and see if you can get more bang for your buck there.

Oh and forgot, bought the Little One a road bike this Summer...so I guess I have recently bought a bike.

Depending on your definition of a trail that could be pretty tough. Mountain bikes are inefficient on the road and road bike wheels and tires are too fragile for offroad trails. A hybrid is probably your best option as it will be pretty good for the road and will handle mild offroad use. That Hardrock you posted would make a good mountain bike to start with and will work on the street if you just want to joy ride. If you're really trying to get from point A to point B on the street or riding with others on road bikes, you're going to want something more road inspired.

Like E.J. said, road and mountain/XC are very different. I can't stand riding a road bike just to grind out miles, but knocking out miles of trail on a mountain bike is one of my favorite things to do.

jt09 is a bit of a road rider, so you might wait for his response if you're more interested in road biking.

I don't know anything about that bike, other than a new one looks like it would cost about $50 more. That is an assumption, but looks like a HR MSRP's for $440 or $480 and I wouldn't pay MSRP for one. So depending on age, regardless of miles or abuse, think that person is trying to get almost what they paid for the bike....

I could be wrong... Confused

to start with, the guy selling it is an idiot, so you're going to get an amazing deal. it's a 29", not a 28" (no such thing). my guess is it's stolen. that's a very new bike, with computer at a ridiculous price.

Jt, on the Specialized site, it doesn't even show that the HR comes in a 29er... Bet it's a 26...

Here you go....though at that price, stolen.... Laughing

It looks like this is the bike in the ad:
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/archive/2013/hardrock/hardrocksportdisc29#features

Hardrock used to be Specialized lowest level MTB, but that may have changed since they offered it with hydraulic disc brakes in 2013. I was trying to find what MSRP on that bike was new, but can't find it in my brief search. $350 may be a fair deal, but I wouldn't pay more than $275 because his ad sucks.

Yep, if it really MSRP'd @ $699 and is like new, not a bad deal.

bikepedia shows msrp @$590: http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2014&Brand=Specialized&Model=Hardrock%20Disc%2029&Type=bike

none of that matters if it doesn't fit you.

by the way - if it does fit, it's perfect for what you want it for. the components aren't top flight, but they're perfectly good. too many noobs get worried about buying lower end components, but if you're not beating it up w/ hard riding, that stuff is perfectly fine. if you do break some, fixing is plenty affordable when you bought the whole bike so cheap, even upgrading.

just like a wakeboards, ride it before you buy it. can't stress that enough.

Except the n-word was created to be demeaning and the other is a verb based on a common behavior of a certain ethnic group.

Yes, Jews take offense to the word being used as a verb which means the equivalent of haggling on price, but there's a reason it has that meaning. At least it didn't take on the meaning of reneging or welshing.

It's demeaning and in poor taste to use, it's that simple. When I read it, I shook my head.

On a serious note. I have never even thought about that being offensive. That is a phrase pretty much everyone around here uses when talking about haggling prices.

I have always just thought of it as a common phrase not anything offensive, and yes I know a few Jewish people who do not find it offensive at all.

I can see your point though JT some Jews may find it offensive, but to compare it to the N word.....C'MON Man!
