Does this bother anyone? This make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
| Quote: | Net neutrality is dead.
At least that's the verdict of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, which today struck down a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) order from 2010 that forced Internet service providers (ISPs) like Verizon, AT&T, Comcast and Time Warner Cable to abide by the principles of network neutrality. These principles broadly stipulate that ISP network management must be transparent, and that ISPs can't engage in practices that block, stifle or discriminate against (lawful) websites or traffic types on the Internet. |

This is most likely going to end up being a major blow to anyone that wants to cut the cord with traditional TV. I can see ISP's throttling or charging you a premium to use sites like Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc in the near future. _________________ RIP DLS.

Agreed. Mine already throttles my connection since I'm an "internet only" subscriber. It's f*cking ridiculous.
While I generally agree with the "vote with your wallet" concept, it's really hard to apply it to something when I've only got one choice. Hopefully someone pulls a T-Mobile when all this blows up and actually takes some progressive steps forward to give reasonable service instead of very thickly padded profit margins. Even if it was more expensive, I'd jump-ship immediately for someone who could provide me with a great internet-only experience. Hoping Google Fiber eventually makes it down my way. They may be helping Uncle Sam spy on us. But f*ck it. I got nothing to hide and I want my HD streaming! |

Net Neutrality is not "dead". It will get it's day in SCOTUS.
That said:
The federal judge(s) who struck this down are f*cking morons. They cited GOOGLE FIBER as a sign that there is competition in this marketplace. GOOGLE FIBER - you know, the ISP that's in what, 2 extremely limited markets? Yeah, good call your honor, let's use one of the smallest ISP's in the country as an example of how consumers have choices.
At most right now I have 2 choices for land based ISP. That is not competition. You can't have competition in markets where there are no competitors (read: almost the entire f*cking USA).
If this holds up, and VZW, Comcast, etc start throttling users en masse, my guess is that Google will throw whatever it takes behind Fiber and get it rolled out everywhere they can as fast as they can. You want to kill the goose that layed the golden egg Verizon/Comcast/TWC? I DARE YOU. _________________

FWIW, I saw a great analogy the other day (I'll paraphrase):
"Hi Amazon, Comcast here. Yeah, uhh, so if you guys want to sell stuff to people who are on our ISP we want a cut. So, from now on, you need to pay us 2% of all sales, or we will block your sites. *ring ring* Oh hello Netflix. Yeah thanks for calling us back. If your customers want to stream over our ISP, we want 25% of their subscription fees. Go what myself? OK then, you're blocked until you give us 50% of the fee and kiss my ass, literally. Good luck with that. Xfinity rulez NutFlax drools. SUCKERS." _________________

Anecdotally, Comcast has the worst customer service experience I have ever been involved with. Combined with there we don't give a Bubb Rubb attitude in regards to distribution of there broadcast products(at least in PDX), I would have to agree it would only be a matter of when till they started some serious stuff. _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian? |

eeven73, the only division of Comcast I've had a good experience with is their Business Class division. They have been really good across the board. Night and day from what I've experienced with their consumer divisions. _________________

Not me. My ISP is a local telco and their customer service has been stellar. Their pricing isn't terrible either, I get 18/18 symmetrical fiber, phone, and tv from them for $131 (including taxes). _________________

They bent over backwards to get our account. They had to pull to the building (100+ feet), and their techs spent a solid day here getting everything set up - doing everything exactly as I asked (wire routing, equipment placement, etc).
All for a 99/month account on a 24 month contract. We were the first in the building to get their service, so I think they wanted to use us as a springboard to get access to the other tenants. The previous "best" service that could be had in this building was bonded DSL (max 16/3) for a similar price, so my guess is they will get almost all of the accounts in the building as soon as people come off their existing contracts. _________________

I'm not saying I want more regulation. But, I'm concerned that this is a piece of legislation that was shot down simply to benefit corporate america, rather than consideration if individual benefits. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

It was a couple years ago now, but our current IP provider called with a preemptive strike to discount there service because Comcast was in the area cutting price. So we got the price and didn't have to change.
Comcast was very competative but I wasn't willing to risk system problems like I had experienced at my residence with our work system. Days and weeks without service(BS solutions and waiting) would be catastrophic. I didn't care what they said about different division etc. too much risk. _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian? |

I'm not a regular HuffPost reader and I refuse to put a lot of stock in "news" reports with headlines about "Why you should freak out about....." It usually follows that some sensational speculation is about to take place in order to justify the headline.
While this IS entirely possible, I don't see it lasting very long if an ISP wants to take the speculated steps. Outside of the FCC regulation, I can see the sites like Netflix, Hulu, Pornhub, etc. filing antitrust litigation against ISPs engaging in this conduct relatively quickly to put a halt to it. This practice would constitute both a vertical and a horizontal restraint of trade that violate long-standing antitrust laws to protect against this type of thing. _________________

The benefit I had was the ability to watch them actually pull the cable in and oversee the building installation. Pretty impressed by their overall attention to detail. Might have been due to me watching but it all is very clean and very solid.
We haven't had an issue so I can't speak to their problem solving abilities, but given how stout the initial install is, I can't imagine we will have many problems during our contract period. _________________

I don't really have a problem with the ISP's (that I've dealt) customer service, it's more about delivering the speed that I'm paying for. _________________ RIP DLS.

The thing is there have been plenty of reports and a fair amount of evidence that Verizon, Comcast, etc have already engaged in these practices in the past.
This very case is based upon the FCC's ruling that ISPs may not "shall not block lawful content, applications, services or non-harmful devices, subject to reasonable network management” and “shall not unreasonably discriminate in transmitting lawful traffic over a consumer’s broadband Internet access service.”
IOW: exactly what Netflix, Pornhub, etc would be claiming the ISPs are doing in an antitrust suit.
Anyhow, I hope this gets to SCOTUS and they slap it down. Better yet, hopefully enough common ground exists on this topic in congress and change the law. I'm looking at you Darrell Issa (R-Calif). You like this decision but want better regulation? Get to work a$$hole. _________________

wakeboarderdave1, not a problem here:
Work (Comcast Business, 27/10)
Home (SureWest FIOS, 16/16)
PS: I was wrong about home. It's 16/16 symmetrical. Obviously they have the pipe open wider. _________________

wakeboarderdave1, people think Sacramento is full of cowbells. Nevermind the 2 million + that live in the general area.
That said, my ISP is the local phone company. They used to be called Roseville Telephone Company before getting bought by Surewest Communications (who also serves KC if I understand it correctly). They are highly localized for the most part - when I call customer servix I am usually talking to one of my neighbors instead of Ranjit.... errr.. "Dave".
They were smart enough to drop fiber in all newly constructed areas post 2001. My office building was under construction in 2000, so it just missed. But my house was built in 2002 - BAM! Fingers in the Internet. _________________

I was reading about this last night, and now can't find the article. Anyways, it was saying that the judge was forced to overturn this because a of a 1996 law that didn't include the internet as an "essential" service to the public, like telephone was. Back in 96 everyone was dialing into the internet and cable internet was in its infancy. _________________ Brent B

Broccoli B, basically yes. ISPs are not considered "common carriers". If they were the ruling would likely have been different.
Obviously times have changed. It will be interesting to see if the FCC plays that card, or if congress takes action to reclassify them. _________________

They do, but only about 1/4 of the city-mostly on the Kansas side of the state line. Wish I could get them in my part of town but us poor Missourah folk can't do that. Yet. _________________
