Saw this in Yahoo and kind of caught my attention. Their show definitely has a lot of popularity and they don't mince words about being Christian. To me, this isn't shocking that you would get an answer like this from a member of that family.

Do you think this will have a drastic impact on the show popularity? Should they be forced to apologize or retract the statement? They seem very unapologetic about their beliefs and stand strong by what they believe...think they will back down on this?

Quote:
The stars of "Duck Dynasty" might be America's most popular TV family, but that could change very soon — because Phil Robertson has made some seriously divisive anti-gay remarks that have sparked instant backlash.

Speaking with GQ, Robertson lamented that when "everything is blurred on what's right and what's wrong ... sin becomes fine." So just what qualifies as sinful in his book?

"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there — bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," he declared.

I doubt so. Phil is very devout in what he believes and most people could assume that's what he'd thought already. Most devout Christians believe homosexuality is wrong. Not really much of a shocker.

Shouldn't be surprising for anyone who watches the show. I don't know if it's self censorship or editing, but they generally do a good job on the show of not crossing the line. Calling things Sissy when I'm guessing they'd normally say gay, etc.

Honestly, I doubt the comments will amount to much. Phil is not a hateful man, which is obvious from the show. He just believes differently and generally has a good way with words. They'll let this one slide and find someone who's more hate-able.

Good for him not conforming. Too often people are expected to jettison their personal beliefs in favor of what pop culture accepts. I say F! them and good on you Phil. I honestly believe that the Robertson's are good and honest folk. Who cares what their beliefs are on sexuality.

Just as some get uncomfortable with religion in the public arena there are many uncomfortable with sexuality (any kind) in the public arena, only issue is only one side gets called a bigot for holding that belief.

I can't say that I am surprised and the answer he gave was about what I would have expected to hear. GLAAD also responded like I would have expected.

He'll answer for his actions some day. IMO, people will make mistakes in their lives and the key thing is whether they learn from the mistakes and change.

In all fairness, Phil has the right to express his opinions and beliefs. A&E has a right to act on that expression as his "employer". The viewers have a right to react upon A&E's decision.

Funny how that we're so overly sensitive in this country now, that if someone disagrees with you, or has a different belief, you must be offended.

I don't agree with the guy, but I don't find anything wrong or surprising about this "revelation". He's a devout Christian, and most Christians believe homosexuality is a sin. It wasn't like anything he said was hateful either.

The guy shouldn't have to lie about his beliefs just to satisfy the media and a bunch of whiny ass people who look for things to be offended about. Also, as already pointed out, this guy turned down an NFL career to hunt, started a company that turned into a multi-million dollar business. He lives in a double wide on hundreds of acres of land and hunts everyday. Does anyone think that he gives two shits about this show or the money? He has everything he wants for the rest of his life. Now he just has more time to hunt, which is all he wants to do anyways.

I can't believe this is the first time that a reporter has asked him about it. I don't imagine he's too quiet about his beliefs about anything (you guys have seen the show, you know).

Also, it's not like he identified homosexual acts as the only thing that was sinful. In the same sentence he also suggests that those who sleep around or engage in pre-marital sex are in the same boat!

When I read the article, I thought he made it pretty clear that he didn't hate or despise or anything like that towards homosexuals. He's not a bigot, he just doesn't agree with homosexual acts . . .

I think the reason he said "start with homosexual behavior . . ." is because that is what him and the reporter had been chatting about:

Reporter: Phil, what do you think about homosexuals?
Phil: It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.
Reporter: Well, what's sin?
Phil: Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.

Perhaps they could sell the rights to Duck Dynasty to another network that won't care? I'd imagine that franchise is worth quite a chunk of change.

That said, given the other shows on their network, I'd not be surprised if a good number of their "reality" show "actors" held similar opinions.

I attended a fundraiser dinner with Phil, Kay, Willie, Korie, Alan, and Lisa Robertson over the summer. All were nice enough. Phil seemed the least enthused about being there. Kay really liked to talk about food and cooking. Willie was actually pretty quiet, at least compared to the rest of the group. Korie was nice and engaging, she came from a fair amount of money, at least compared to the others. Lisa wouldn't quit talking, and Alan wasn't shy either.

The show is actually somewhat scripted and they read through the scenes before shooting. Some scenes are based on prior funny stories. Some are just thought up by the producers.

I would say that is an accurate description based on my experience.

Phil has wanted off the show or to have the show quit filming for a while now. The ratings are slipping as well.

A&E had to know this was coming out. It's an interview in a magazine. There is no way they didn't know what was in there. They could have gotten out in front of this a long time ago. Instead, they get millions in free advertising and Phil gets to leave the show.

Oh, and GQ, they will sell a few more magazines. Marketing well done.

plus, phil doesn't seem like the type to engineer controversy. he just answered what was asked.

It did, but they are off of their peak. Phil answered honestly, I have no doubt about that. How it has been handled, by A&E, is more of the controversy that I was speaking too.

So, it's been interesting watching and thinking about this whole Robertson interview and the reaction. Here are some thoughts...

1. What he said was his right to say.
2. A&E has the right to react how they decide.
3. Nobody's freedom of speech has been violated.
4. He is not homophobic (He shared what the Bible says and what he thinks he should follow).
5. He is not racist (He shared an observation)

I think both sides of this issue should step back and realize that we all have the right to state our beliefs, others have the right to disagree, and we can all still go on living life and loving each other, agreeing to disagree. It is not the end of the world.

he didn't sting african americans. he said what he saw growing up while he was white trash working next to them. no one complained that was working the fields. they all just worked. they were all poor. And by all, I mean the white folks, as well as the black.

This, in summary, should be the end of it. I've successfully avoided ever watching this show but there seems to be about a dozen other similar shows built around so-called "rednecks". The production/media companies and the people who watch them can't be surprised that the people on these shows may not be the most enlightened or progressive people.

Duck dynasty craze fans no.

I've been watching Phil since I was 14 years old, so that's 10 years for me. The duck men have been around much much longer than duck dynasty.

It's getting harder and harder for me to believe that this was anything other than a wise business decision by a shrewd business man and I wouldn't be shocked if A&E wasn't in on it either.
