Everything started well, including getting an A on his sweater..... Senior Season and had a run at the State Title on their minds.
Last night threw a big wrench into that. 'Bout half way through the 1st, was skating the puck out of the zone, took what appeared to be a benign hit from the side that knocked him off his skates, where he slid into the boards at his own bench. He got up, went right to the bench, didn't even try to skate back out. At the period he came to the locker room and then to the hospital.
Because of 2 traumas at the hosptial, he was not actually able to consult with one of the ortho docs(actually the floor where step mom works[RN], she walked down to the ER to meet up with him), so at this point, we don't have a firm idea of the treatment plan.
I have to assume he's missing most, if not all, of his HS season, not to mention the travel team season..... Could be worse & as a parent, having your kid walk out of the hosptial with something as common and fixable as this, is better than the alternative, but he doesn't want to hear that.... |

College....for the education, not sport. I do assume that he'll try to hook onto the club team where he goes. |

Sees the orthopedist today, actually seeing him right now. I talked with an old friend, an ortho-surgeon, actually forwarded pics of the xrays.... He is a big fan of the ortho LM is seeing today & says ballpark, 6-8 weeks minimum. Says he has tried to get athletes back sooner, but the possibility of re-fracture is high if not completely stable, especially in football and hockey, ect.
6 weeks would get him back for holiday tournament in Phoenix....though as far as I am concerned, he's not going back on the ice for full contact play until we hear "It's as stable as it's going to get. You are no more likely to re-fracture, than you were before to fracture." I'll cross my fingers that gives him the end of the regular season(last one/three games) and playoffs. |

Good plan. Sorry to hear it happened. Still lots of hockey in early 2014, though! _________________

EXCELLENT news at the orthopedist today. No surgery and feels like he'll be good to go in 6 weeks. Assuming he heals like expected, 4% chance of re-fracture at 6 weeks. If I was hearing correctly, that 4% does not change from 6 weeks to 4 months. Goes back in 5 weeks to get cleared for the 6 week contact.
Can get back on the ice(no contact) next week, maybe 2, depending on how he is feeling. |

sorry to hear about the collar bone. Having broke mine in the past there's really not much they can do... they do heal quickly but you have to be careful with shoulder down the road. Make sure he keeps it strong and stretched out.
Crossed fingers for a speedy recovery.. _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

Sorry to hear about his injury. A couple kids on my son's FB team had some big injuries, including a collar bone. Definitely take the safest route on getting him healed up so he doesn't reinjure. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Thanks all...
Not cleared for Coyote Cup in Phoenix... Well, cleared...but ortho said with the amount of contact we'd expect, it would be a small risk. Thought he'd be fine, but said if it was his kid, he'd wait for the 8th(next game after holiday tourney). Said he could bomb it then, no worries.
Killing him to sit....can't imagine how that'd feel.
Not to mention, not getting to some 70-80F weather... I just had the snowblower out for about 2 hours & 6-7" of snow... |
