What's amazing is that Blackberry still exists. Who still uses a Blackberry? I know they used to own the business market but hasn't android and apple taken a majority of that marketshare?

This persistent BB logo in my notification tray is bugging me. Been waiting for my invite for a day now, yet BBM still needs to be connected? Not off to a great start so far.

finkle, Amazing they held on this long but not for much longer, they're in process of being sold, likely in pieces to different companies.

My company still uses BB as the main phones they give out with a handful of iPhones for the creative groups (but very few, a lot of people use their personal devices just because they prefer how much easier it is).

I think BB lasted so long for the same reason I'm running Windows XP from 2002 on my work PC and our official browser is IE, because big companies are inefficient and are slow to adapt to changes in tech due to fear of security risks/expense. If the old system works, why update it for something new?

Android/iOS is absolutely taking over though, BB won't be around for much longer...

We love ya Alter Ego, but damn I hope you have already enacted plan B for your employment.

My father, techno-inept as he is, has switched over to iOS from BB, and his entire company is now replacing their BB's with iPhones. They are about as behind the times a company when it comes to tech that I know, and they are kicking BB to the curb post-haste. They are just one of many, many companies that are ditching BB in the tens of thousands of units as quickly as they can. This is the very end, and it's a damn shame.

As for BBM? Why would I download a messaging app for a messaging service that nobody I know uses? And I mean noooooobody. I'd be better off using Yahoo IM. There is a halfway chance that someone I know is still using that. Neutral

Sorry man. Sad

If BBM had come out 5, even 3 years ago for other devices, it would have been a WIN WIN WIN.

right now?

who cares? no one uses it anymore.

10M downloads of BBM for iOS and Android in 1 day!

I think you guys are underestimated just how underserved and segmented the mobile messaging market really is.

It's actually quite interesting...I can only think of 2 other industries where people are as passionate as they are about their smartphone....Sports team they cheer for and the car they drive. Crazy.

I was one of those, uninstalled for the reason that scotta posted. What's the point of downloading an app if you can't use it?

STPHNSN23, when I had a blackberry, it was nice to see when a message was sent and then read. The iPhone iMessage started doing this several months ago, but BBM did it years ago. Beyond that, I'm not sure what advantage BBM has.

When I got my first BB I didn't even notice this feature on BBM... I remember an ex-gf chewing me out for reading a text and not responding for 9 hours. Wasn't sure how she knew that until she pointed out the little 'R' beside the text. "oooh! that's what that is." Embarassed

Lots of people want to get onto the service, but the service is slow to allow anyone in. Sounds exactly like Google+...and that's not a good thing.

500K people are getting to the front of the line per hour....not really like google+ where they held it just to be cool.

jt09, it's a texting app on blackberrys. Why anyone uses it over a regular text, I have no idea.

finkle,
The only reason I like iMessage is because my living room is a dead zone as far as cell signal goes. It's strange, and it sucks, but it's nice to have iMessage to text friends if I'm in my living room. I assume BBM would be similar

its free
texting is unreliable - sometimes they go right away, but in heavy network scenarios texting doesnt work
there is a delivered / read feature. so you can see when your message is delivered and when its read. makes it feel more like a conversation than sending an email and hoping they got it and read it.
its free globally as long as you have a data plan
its cross platform now
the chatting is easy
fun little icons
you can control who is on your contact list. so who you see and who sees you. if you delete them off your list, you wont show up on theirs anymore
sharing photos, video and other media is dead simple

Its like texting on steriods.

just my point of view anyways. its pretty darn popular.

^you just described WhatsApp (and their 300mm daily active users). Or Skype, FB messenger, Hangouts, AIM, YIM, or *insert IM program that has been widely available for years here*.

through some conversations over the last several days and how my facebook news feed is exploding with people sharing their codes, I've learned that the draw is for those now on androids/iphones but used to have blackberries and their favourite thing about it was BBM. now that they can have it on their current phone, they're excited again!

I used whatsapp for a while. didn't really love it.

either way, i'll stick with text/imessage.

arof, iMessage/Text really is the best of both worlds. It unifies the stream to one app, allows for basically seamless integration with both services with very little trouble.

There are some apps on the Android side doing similar - one is FB Messenger (can opt to unify FB messages and SMS), and another, in development but with lots of promise, is Disa. Disa is attempting to unify SMS, WhatsApp, FB, and others (like Viber) into a consolidated application. If they get it all working (WhatsApp and SMS already work really well), they will have a smash hit on their hands.

Google Hangouts will probably be getting SMS support sometime soon as well.

Its a sad day. My blackberry crapped out after four years and i've been holding out to see if my company would support the z10. Never going to happen i guess.

So i've had a loaner iphone for the past two weeks. I don't get the love affair with it. Its good for some things but blows more for things i like. So my new 5 came in today. I just don't get it. Maybe the only thing i'll like is at least i can get bbm again.

I like the keyboard not going to lie to you. My calendar never sinks properly. My battery hasn't lasted a whole day, could be an old phone? I miss the flashing red light when i have a message. My email doesn't push as well.

I like the bbm much better then texting. So i hope the bbm on the iphone is the same. Honestly i don't need a toy i need something for work and i like the blackberry for work better.

Don't say apps either. I couldn't care less about apps. I think i have four apps on my ipad so thats as low of a priority as you can get for me Smile

Sync is on the exchange, not the phone. This goes for calendar, contacts, email, tasks, and notes. If it ain't working right, bitch at your IT folks and don't take anything short of "it works perfect" as an answer.

I've had the light and not had it (do have it now on my S4) and I could see how people get used to it.

iMessage works as well as bbm as far as messaging other contacts goes. If you have lots of contacts still stuck in the last decade on BB, then the BBM app will fill the gap for you.

Apps are definitely in the realm of "to each their own" so I am not a person who will try to sell you that bill of goods.

And I know it's of little consolation right now, but you will get better at the keyboard over time...

I was a Blackberry user up until the iPhone 4 came out. I don't keep up with the new phone features and updates, I just happened to switch when the iPhone 4 came out. I always preferred the keyboard of the Blackberry for typing e-mails. BBM was nice, but only worked with other Blackberry users. By the time the iPhone 4 was out, I had about 5 people that I still communicated with through BBM. For just about everything else, the iPhone is better.

We use an Exchange server with our iPhones and I have no complaints about the sync.

For battery life, I don't remember a big difference in switching from BB to iPhone. I charge my phone all night, and it almost always lasts all day. Sometimes I'm down to 20% battery and sometimes I'm down to 5% by the end of the day. The only times it doesn't last all day is if I'm somewhere without reception and I don't turn it off or put it in airplane mode. I do think Apple batteries can be inconsistent. My wife's iPad battery seems to last twice as long on a full charge as mine.
