|
|
So i'm getting off the BMW train. It's been a fun ride, but I want a reliable car that I can trust and not worry about. With that said, I'm gonna be looking for a new beater/daily driver. Looking to spend between 5000-6000. This leaves my options limited, but at this point, I just need a car to get me from point at to point b. Something reliable..
So far I've considered
Accords
Early 00's acuras
Miata (Zoom zoom)
Any other good ideas? I can't think of much, but I have noticed Miatas go cheap. |

Mazda 3. great little car with decent trunk space and the back seats fold down. I had one for a while and really liked that car. _________________ Work SUX! |

^that, but a 5 door.
I was pretty damn surprised at the rental Maz3 we had. It had the smaller engine, but it did fine. We drove 70 or so miles, and when I put gas in, it only took like 2.3 gallons. 50/50 city/highway driving too. It was quiet, had decent space (for it's class), and was light on it's wheels. Nice little car - I'd bet the stick is even better to drive.
A buddy of mine had a loaded up Maz3 sedan (2010 I think) with the 2.5. It had more power, sure, but it was a lot thirstier. _________________

I second the Mazdas, great reliability without the Toyota/Honda premium.
A TDI jetta would be a solid option too, don't be afraid of one with 150K on it my in-laws had a pair that both went north of 225k before they sold them which motivated me to get my Passat. _________________

goofyboy, I was shocked when it clicked off at 2 gallons. Didn't believe it, so I let it go a bit more, clicked again at 2.2, then 2.3 - so I called it a day.
Somewhere approaching 35 in mixed driving (and I was not nice to it) was great. _________________

the 2.5 with an automatic never gave me over 29 on the interstate cruising at 75ish. |

Anything Subaru
I have an 03 forester XS that I love. the only thing I would chance is to have an XT turbo. That being said the fact that you can put ALL of the power to the ground at all times makes it a fast car for what it is.
The XTs will run with damn near anything. And people mod the hell out ot them so there's plenty of aftermarket out there should you catch the mod bug. I'm going the rally/off road route, but plenty of people drop them and make one hell of a street car. _________________ MMMM... COFFEE |

i don't believe they got those cars for 1500 pounds a piece. there's no way. the wrx did look good though, especially with the toilet seat hood scoop. |

Alright time to once again update. After a 650$ alternator replacement, I finally have some support on getting a newer car, and getting rid of the nazi sled. My budget has gone up a little, looking at around 10k now, but if something amazing is 12k it can happen.
I've been trying to keep my search pretty wide open, and I don't have a certain type of car that i'm looking for, just something slick, and useful. Here's what I like so far in the price range:
Infiniti G35-There's actually quite a few low mileage accident free models. Test drove one a week or so ago and really liked it.
Toyota 4runner-I've always liked these, and the newer body style fits in my price range. Only problem I have is the gas mileage sucks.
Other than that, I haven't found much else I like. I prefer luxury cars mainly because they get all the nifty features first, I'd prefer to stay japanese/american. |

+1 on the Mazda3. I have a grey '06 hatchback that I have a blast with. 152k miles and still going very strong. Got a lot of room in it, comfy, fun to drive, good mileage. Not really "luxury" but definitely a great car. Mine is the GT version so it has the leather-ish seats, not the cloth. I wouldn't want the cloth. If you're into having a nice screen in your car, you can pick up an Eonon made specifically for the 3. Looks pretty sweet (looks stock, even) in the dash and has nice features. |

And you miiiiight be able to find a decent Mazdaspeed3 for around 12k. Even if it has high mileage, I would give it a chance, unless you're looking to mod it a little and show it off on the street. Otherwise, scratch the speed3 in that price range. |

i wouldn't touch a used MS3, wrx, or anything similar. you know how the idiots who buy these cars drive them. |

speaking of gas mileage - G35 is going to net you below 20 around town, and maybe 28-29 highway. Just saying.
Still think the Maz3 5 door is an excellent driver for the $. _________________

mazda3 with the 2.3 won't do 30 mpg on the highway either though. it will do better around town. my mother just got a new mazda3 with the skyactive 2.0. it's supposed to do 40 mpg on the highway and over 30 in town. it's slow as balls though. |

she had a 2007 which still had the 2.3, but that's neither here nor there. it's still a great car. she just got a 2013 5-door with 2.0. i haven't spent enough time driving it to have a real good impression of it yet, but it does feel super slow. i'm used to my wrx though so i'm probably not the best judge. |

STPHNSN23, yeah that might alter your perception of slow/fast.
The 2.0 that I drove did not feel fast by any stretch, but it got where it needed to be without much complaint. It should be noted that by default it was the fastest car in the world (rental car), so I wasn't what you'd call "nice" to it, and it still returned 30+ mpg in mixed driving.
Obviously I don't have an issue trading off some speed for much better MPG, I drive a TDi. _________________

accords and early acura's blow. stay away. If you live in an area where cars rust a little faster run as far away as you can from those. When I was looking for vehicles for my daughter those were high on my list. They went to the bottom basically after test driving them.
We looked at Mazda 3's, Nissan Protege's, Ford Focus, Subaru's, I hate anything toyota so I didn't look at them at all. Ended up with the Focus, was a couple of grand cheaper then any cars of the above list, and I think as good if not better.
Depending on the year, the mazda is just a cheaper built Ford. The Subaru's you have to look for head gasket issues. If's burning white run away... 5-6k should get you a decent car. _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

STPHNSN23, I can get right at 30 mpg in mine on the highway with mid-grade at around 77-79 mph, so it's possible with the 2.3. I average 28 mpg otherwise with about half in town, half highway. It's a 5 speed, which helps. |

chavez,
I guess I should've specified on gas mileage.. I get about 19 City 27 Highway now, though some trips Ive gotten 29-30 highway. I'm ok with losing a little bit from that, Just would like to not be the 12/19 type MPG numbers. |

We are getting about 18 city in the new G37. Having 330hp certainly makes up for that, but it's still not optimal.
It's quite the contrast to the TDi, which gets around 34 city and clears 40 on the highway (at at 75mph - much better MPG can be had if we did 65). _________________
