Help me out Wakeboarder.com!

Trying to get a rental car and facing exorbitant prices, no matter what company I use. Some companies are even sold out of the standard/economy size cars that long weekend I'm traveling.

Anyone have discounts or coupons for a rental car company that they're not going to be using? Or have any hints that can help me?

Love you guys! Thank you!

I'm sure you tried sites like hotwire/priceline/kayak?

Where are you going to again? If it's available there, sometimes you can get a good rate from Zip car.

If you're flying in and out of a major airport, sometimes you can get a better rate from avis/hertz/alamo/whatever location a few miles from the airport instead of the airport location. I'm an Avis preferred member due to a lot of time spent on the road for work, and I have no issues with returning my car at the airport location instead of where I rented it at.

Aubs, i gave you some grief about this last night, but i ask this seriously: what price range do you think you should be seeing? i get the feeling your expectations aren't exactly realistic. 5 days at $225 is $45/day - that's completely normal.

Don't be shocked by the high taxes assessed too, make sure whatever prices you see are a complete price and not just the fee per day.

This^

Our last rental in Chicago had a base of 300 for the week, total after taxes and fees and such was closer to 600.

I think I paid $130 for a jetta for 4 days, 2000 mile trip at my aiport. Summertime, not around a holiday though.

About the best prices I've ever seen are doing the bid thing on priceline. You should be able to knock it down by about 50-60% off their typical "advertised" prices. Not sure where you're going to be or when, but priceline can usually get you in an economy car for ~$25/day and a standard for ~$40/day with the bid option.
