no big cookout, but it's barely noon and my saturday hasn't sucked at all.
my brother and his wife are moving to austin, so they dropped off their labs last night. i'll take them for a couple of weeks while they look for a place to live. took them to the dog park at the lake this morning around 7 to run and sniff and fetch and swim.
while they dried off on the deck, i made myself a little leftover omelette and got rid of some spinach, bacon and cheese i had in the fridge.
hadn't had any cue in a while, so i headed over to john mueller meat co. for lunch. first time i've had the baked squash and it was f*ing unreal. would have eaten a quart of it in one sitting. beef rib and sausage were on point and mexican coke to wash it all down.

Your food threads have gotten me into BBQing...Thanks!
I grabbed a big green egg and have been cooking everything from Boston butts to Spatchcock chicken to pizzas...Im smoking or high temp grilling three or four times a week...The food is amazing and I never thought I could cook better than restaurant quality foods..I've learned more about cooking in the last six months than I ever thought I would know.
I literally have people asking to come over to eat and to cater... _________________ You know you own someone when you can agitate them enough to quote you in their signature. |

Since I was successful doing an over night smoke on a 15lb brisket, I'll be doing a lot more in the future. Pork ribs and brisket are damn good off my smoker. My next challenge will be a turkey. _________________ Work SUX! |

Tbonez, so cool. I got the bug about 10 years ago and love to BBQ and grill.

For sure. There is a lot of reward in hearing how much the friends enjoy the food, too.
jt...that food looks good. The baked squash sounds good. I love squash. Any ideas on exactly what they did? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

I just picked up a Daniel Boone pellet smoker http://www.greenmountaingrills.com and couldn't be more happy. Have cooked up excellent briskets, baby pack ribs, pulled pork, Mac and Cheese, pizza, you name it. Actually have been eating nothing but pulled pork for the last week since i smoked 15 pounds of it. Plain pulled pork, pork sandwiches, pork tacos, pork salad, pulled pork fried rice, you name it. _________________ Brent B

I've heard a lot of good things about the pellet smokers. Do you like it? Have you cooked with an offset smoker with wood before? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Broccoli B, I was just looking at those. I guess keeping temp isn't a problem at all. Any drawbacks so far? _________________ There'll be two dates on your tombstone/ And all your friends will read 'em/ But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em... |

I've been using a Yoder YS640 pellet grill and have been amazed by the results. You get the ease of an oven in setting your temp and the benefits of a smoker in color, flavor and smoke ring. A big sticker shock at purchase, but costs much less to run it on pellets than purchasing wood. The only drawback I can see is you're hosed without an electrical connection |

I've never seen a pellet smoker. If you want to get a smoker to learn with, you can't go wrong with the Weber Smokey Mountian. It comes in two sizes 18.5" and 22". I have the 18.5. It's damn near idiot proof. go here to see more: www.webervirtualbullet.com _________________ Work SUX! |

I have used a wood fired side smoker with mixed results.
Some say the pellet smokers are not real BBQ for the simple fact that they just make it to darn easy.
The only draw back i have found so far is that the pellets are so efficient that there is less smoke flavor. A lot of competitive BBQers use devices to burn additional pellets or wood chips to produce more smoke.
It is really nice to be able to set the pellet smoker at 180 degrees and have no worries that it will stay there all by itself for as long as you keep the hopper full. I smoked a brisket over night at 180 by simply putting the brisket on the cooker at 11PM and then waking up at 8AM the next morning to finish it off. _________________ Brent B

Electric smokers are the way to go. I use chucks instead of pellets in mine, but same thing. Temperature control is key to good bbq, with an electric smoker you have complete control with the punch of a button.
But I get it jt09, it was a little embarrassing to make the switch, almost feels like cheating. I got over that real quick though. |

If you are referring to ease of use, then yes you are correct. Flavor is a different story. You would not be able to tell if bbq is cooked from an electric or manual smoker whereas you can definitely tell if food is cooked from an oven v. microwave.
Actually I am not sure how microwaves are easier to use than ovens, they are just quicker and electric smokers are not quicker than manual smokers, so no I disagree altogether. |

look, i'm just busting chops here, and i'm sure you guys are making good food, but there's absolutely a difference. there's a reason places that use electric smokers don't get listed on best bbq lists. if electric produced the same result w/ less effort, more people would have electric. |
