A couple of years ago I did some research on going to Powell.

I'm sure there's enough people on this board that have been or know there way around there so I figured I'd ask here first.

Driving from Calgary, so I'd need to at least do this as a 11 day trip. 7 days on the water and 4 days of driving time. I know Salt Lake is at least 12 hours away and I'm assuming Powell is another 5 from there. Is there a decent place to say in Norther Utah just before you start hitting the salt Lake valley?

It seems like there were three different marinas you could rent boats out of, however they all were owned by the same operator. Is that still kind of the case? Because we'd only have a week, i'm thinking we'd want to be closer to some of the better scenery and not have to drive the house boat further then we'd need to.

Best places to see, and best places to board would be helpful.

I think we'd try for the end of August, or into the long weekend in September. I know lots of the Utah/Arizona kids would be back in school at that point so it might be easier to book something? Still be smoken hot for sure though.

Anyways, any suggestions, places to stay, ect ect would be helpful

Thanks

Salt Lake City to Bullfrog(285ish miles) takes about 5ish hours. At least 6.5ish to Wahweap(385ish miles). Those are the 2 destinations. There are 2 marinas in the Bullfrog area, Bullfrog and Halls Crossing. Down on the Page, Arizona side, there is Wahweap and Antelope Point.

I believe there are now 2 different companies to rent houseboats on Powell from. The one that has always been there, which you'd rent out of Bullfrog or Wahweap, Aramark - http://www.lakepowell.com/stay/houseboating/houseboats.aspx & now a company that is renting out of Antelope Point Marina - http://www.lakepowellhouseboating.com/

As far as somewhere to stay in Northern Utah prior to getting to SLC, if you cross the Utah/Idaho border, you are close enough to SLC, that not pushing through wouldn't make sense to me.

IMO, Powell is beautiful wherever you go. Each canyon offers something different. I have great times going out of Wahweap, but usually go to Bullfrog due to distance. We NEVER really go far from the marina due to gas.... We don't go to Lake Powell to explore, but have from time to time...never on our boat... A SAN is just not comfortable doing that.... Laughing Riding is always hit and miss, midday due to traffic. I have been in spots that we could ride from morning until night, only stopping due to being tired, other times it is blown out by boats and/or wind. Early and late are consistently good, if you have people willing to get up at daybreak, you could ride the channel if you wanted, everyone else is sleeping....

September is actually my favorite time to go to Lake Powell.

E.J.,

Cool EJ I was hoping you'd pipe in. I'd think Salt lake would be the logical stopping point but 12 hours might be too much, and it might be longer dragging the boat down for sure. That's why I was thinking even pocatello possibly.

Number one priority would be to see the lake, with riding when it was nice the second. I figured there would be at least 2-4 families going, each with their own boats but I would like to rent some sea doo's for the week to do the actual exploring.

cost wise, what would i be looking at?

I'm going mid-June with a bunch of friends then maybe early September with my parents. No one in either group has even been, so I'm pretty excited but nervous since I'm the only ski boat.

Launching out of Wahweap, then I think the plan is to bounce around. A night here, two nights there. With 11 people and a ski boat that only legally seats 10 (and only 7 comfortably), I'm a little worried I won't get much quality boarding in and will be stressed out as the de facto taxi driver, but we'll see. Only one other serious rider, and I'm guessing everyone else will want to do a lot of exploring.

I'll definitely have notes for you in a month.

Let me know what dates you decide on in August/September.

Idaho Falls or Pocatello make sense, if going to break it up before SLC.

Depends on the houseboat you rent. We've always paid about half of "retail" or whatever you want to call the listed costs....which is listed on those sites.

If going down to Bullfrog, you're going to have to do all your food/drink shopping outside of the actual marina area. Maybe Kanab, which is about an hour and change from Bullfrog. If Wahweap, there is the town of Page there for food/drink shopping.

So you won't be the only boat, just the only tow boat? If not, that sounds like a nightmare.... Laughing

Nope. I'll be the only boat boat Laughing One houseboat, one jet ski, one 21' long, 93" wide ski boat. I think I may just burn the carpet at the end of the week.

Ahhhh....but a houseboat. For some reason I was thinking you'd be packing all the gear and food ect in your boat, campsite to campsite....running a few people at a time, bla..bla..bla... Forgot about the houseboat thing.

Some of our greatest trips were packing in all our chit and beach camping when we were younger....

All this Powell talk has me wanting to plan a trip.... Laughing

EJ how do you manage to pay half the retail costs? From the sounds of it boats need to be booked a year in advance. Or do you get some last minute cancellation stuff?

Usually just get discount codes in the mail.... Because we have booked before, they seem to mail out something at least twice a year.

On the Aramark website, they have 50% and 25% deals right now.... No need to book a year in advance. I am not sure we have never booked more than like 6 months in advance, but usually more like 3-4??? I have come VERY close to booking last second, just something to do for a long weekend. Though because they didn't want to give me a smoking deal, I decided against it. Long story short, boats are not hard to secure.

So you could book a 75' boat for this Sept(know that is not the plan, just a FYI) for 6 nights/7 days for like $6,800 + tax.....gas ect.... http://www.lakepowell.com/hb2013

Depending on how many people are going, may actually consider 2 smaller "deluxe" boats, as opposed to 1 "luxury" big one. It's not just places to sleep....but depending on the boat, you double bathrooms, cooking area ect....
