Yup, I want to see more but it seems really cool. I really like the idea of snapping an app on to the screen while you're watching TV or gaming to interact or pick up skype calls or whatever. Would be really cool if they opened it up to app developers and make the ecosystem more like windows 8 with a little customization by being able to get just the apps I use.
We use our xbox as more of an entertainment hub now (i do play lots of games, but mostly on PC) so something that has solutions for that is perfect for me. The only miss on my part is that they seem to be doing a big push with live TV vs. integrating networks in to the box itself. I was hoping for an alternate solution to cable providers but that's probably still a long way off...
I haven't had cable since 2008 and don't ever plan to again. Probably going to be a buy for me if they improve the content that is available solely through the box (and if someone makes an iTunes plugin, but that's pie in the sky dreams). |

GnarShredd, I'm very interested in how this will interact both ways. If it does it cleanly, and possibly replaces (the box) or supplements a cable connection, I might be more inclined to keep the connection so that it can serve up whatever content I'd like in a very fluid manner.
I know MSFT is thinking in this direction - you can tell because they included both HDMI in AND out. This is absolutely crucial to integrating the system. It has to sit in between the content provider and the TV itself. Logitech and a couple of others did this with GoogleTV, but it is not even in the same arena as this type of device as far as usability is concerned.
I'm also left wondering if this is where Apple is going with the long-rumored iTV. If so, MSFT just punched them in the balls in a major way - and IMO that's fully Apple's fault for taking way too damn long. _________________

chavez, Yeah, that's kind of a bummer for me. I was really hoping to see them replace the cable box, not just sit between it. There could be some really great features though that make TV worth watching again for me (like a gameshow you can play along to, or a mystery TV series like LOST with cool extra features to make it a community thing and help reveal the story). That's what it would take to get me to tune-in every week, but right now I'm happy just streaming on Hulu/Netflix.
I can't wait until the cable companies realize that they need to embrace technology more instead of holding back. I'm someone who would absolutely pay for cable by channel or for smaller channel packages, but I think the system is broken the way it is and is unreasonable pricing for me with the amount of TV I'd be watching (I only watch like 3-5 shows anyway and occasionally college football). Give me an a-la-carte cable solution and I'm sold. I'm sure they'll see the tipping point but we're still a little ways off...
TnR6Rida, Agreed! |
