combine time!
here is texas longhorn and us olympian marquise goodwin and wvu mountaineer tavon austin running the 40 yard dash. goodwin clocked a ridiculous 4.27 - best for 2013 and fastest since chris johnson put down a 4.24 in 2008. austin came in at 4.34.
at the other end of the spectrum, we have oklahoma sooner qb landry jones, who appears to need to use the restroom:
of course, you really want to show your speed in front of all the nfl guys, right? especially when the last thing they heard about was your imaginary online love affair. so, coach harbaugh, how did manti look to you?

Landry Jones looks like he could not care less on the 40 time....WTF, running in a floppy t-shirt and loose basketball shorts...
I can't tell, but I hope he at least wore track shoes.....and didn't complete his outfit with KD V's.....

Star Lotulelei apparently has a heart issue, his agent appears to be spinning it as nothing(dehydration from rapid weight loss) and reports he will work out at the Utah Pro Day on March 20th.
I hope it turns out to be nothing, he already has a wife and kid. Would suck to go from a multi-millionaire to wondering what you are going to do for work, all within a week....

How can a college athlete have such piss poor running form. Seriously, I know he is a quarterback, but if he was any further in the backseat he be riding on the bumper.
Really sucks about Star, it's going to be tough to spin that one. The guy was a top-10 pick now may not be picked depending on what happens over the next month. Surely someone will pick him up at some point and he'd going to need to prove it on the field.

Who ends up going #1 overall? If Alex Smith is getting traded to KC, it looks like it would be either Joeckel or Fisher. Very strange draft this year. Weakest QB class maybe ever, and not a lot of skill position players either. Probably the deepest OL/DL draft in quite some time though. Lots of unsexy picks that will make some teams a LOT better.

| Also, I've always wondered, for as much stock as the NFL puts in measurables from the combine, why don't they make the players run in full pads? Seems like it would provide them with a more accurate measure of what they're really looking for. A guy can run a 4.30 40 in a unitard and track shoes, and end up being slower than a guy who ran a 4.45 40 once all the pads are put on and they're running on a field.

Lane Johnson running a 4.72. Pretty impressive for a 300+ lb Offensive Tackle.
Kenny Stills clocked in sub 4.4 as well. Fast class for the WRs in general

Looks like goodwin will land the Addias shoe contract. Damn it makes me mad that we didn't use him or Monroe more last year. Absolutely no reason for it.

Glad to see Trufant run 4.31 and 4.38 (both unofficial). I think a big question was his top end speed. It was nice to hear the commentators point out his performance against Marquise Lee and Robert Woods, he basically shut them down.

at the Landry Jones 40.
Brutal.
Edit... I just looked up his 40 time 5.1, considering his technique not that bad.

the 40 is the least important event for QBs at the combine -- more so pocket passers. Would point out that Landry is from OU, and OU still sucks.
The cowboys are dead until they fire the GM, so that leads me just pulling for teams with Longhorns. I hope like hell Colt is able to get out of Cleveland, but at this point, he would be a guy that just needs a team, and a Browns paycheck may be better than nothing.
Also, I dont think Goodwin is that great of a football player. He has a hard time running routes to get open - that might actually come with more concentration on football, but as it stands, his downhill speed will land him a gig for a few years, and I dont see him lasting long in the NFL. He is willing to block, but I think his future will be a KR or PR guy until he fumbles a big time special teams opportunity - like Quan did.
I bet this draft produces a great off the radar QB who will be lighting it up in 4 years. Any guess who?

Why bother listing unofficial times if a 4.25 unofficial is actually a 4.43 official time? Not that it matters much in the end but that's a pretty huge disparity for a 40 year dash.

I see Manti Te'o is still full of stuff, and lying to everyone. In an interview after he ran his 40 they were asking him what was wrong, etc. etc. and then asked what he ran at his pre-combine workouts and he said a 4.5
Somebody should have slapped the hell out of him.

Ryan Swope ran a 4.34. I wonder if that's the fastest ever time for a white guy? Considering straight-line speed was considered his biggest "weakness" entering the combine, I'd say he's comfortably placed himself into the 2nd round. Wouldn't shock me at all if NE lets Welker walk (if he wants the contract he's rumored to want) and finds a way to land Swope.
Not as shifty as Welker, but bigger, tougher (won't see him alligator arm throws against Baltimore), a better blocker, faster, jumps higher, more of a deep threat, just as good of hands, good route runner, and he has RB skills/vision so will be just as dangerous as Wes, if not more so, after the catch.
Not to mention he fills the "white receiver/best friend/security blanket white QBs like to have" position nicely.

i was blown away by swope's 40 time. still have a hard time believing it after watching him in high school and college. he has nothing in common w/ welker outside of being white and i think he's a decent prospect, but welker is a pretty high bar to be trying to reach.
and wtf happened w/ demontre moore? that guy was all set to move up the boards fast w/ a good showing. dude seriously shat the bed this weekend w/ 12 reps and 4.95 40. probably not enough to drop out of the first, but enough to cost him some money.

I love Wes, but he's there with Tom Brady in pretty much the only offense that he'd be an elite, 70+ catch receiver. Not sure he'd be a star anywhere else. Swope will stick in this league as a premier slot receiver wherever he lands, so I wouldn't be stunned at all if he could come right in and have a 100 catch season with the Pats within a couple of years.
His 40 time surprised me too but, when I thought about it, I don't ever remember him being caught from behind. Dude has wheels. We all (myself included) just have biased "oh that's a white guy" eyes.

JV - I'm hearing totally opposing insight from a few people I know with insider Pats info. One side says that TB's contract negotiations give Welker more reason to stay, since they are best buds (vacationing together and everything). Other side says his dropped passes stat is too high and the Pats refuse to pay him that $$. Hernandez is working with Brady in the off season, so is Edelman (while coming back from injury). I personally think that if Edelman shows continued progress in the next few weeks/months, then they won't sign Welker back. BB likes Julian, and has a lot of faith in that kid. I dunno. I'm truly torn.
I don't see the Pats getting a new WR. OL or DE are probably toward the top of their draft picks. Maybe Ed Reed in free agency?!? (Hope not on that as well)

| pet575, if kc could acquire smith w/o giving up too much (they can't), then it would be a great get for them. they need stability at that position more than anything. draft a qb in the 2nd or 3rd next year and let him sit behind smith for a year or two and step up after/as smith's contract expires.

I think Smith is going to be a great pick up and KC fans will be pleased.
Sounds like the deal is for a second, which will be the second selection (No. 34 overall) in the round, and another conditional mid-round pick in 2014. That is a lot, no doubt.... But if he does anything close to what he has done is SF the past 2 years, it will be worth it IMO.
I am admittedly biased.

Met the kid once when I was in the GO and it was clear there was no hamster on the wheel. That said didn't he score really well on the wonderlic (40?)?

He is reportedly pretty intelligent. Earned his bachelors @ Utah in 2 years. Also think he presents well when interviewed....

You win! Reportedly the trade is for the 2nd round pick in this year's draft and a mid-rounder next year that is conditional.
ANYTHING would've been an upgrade over Cassel. We just overpaid for someone who might have gotten cut.

| i was coming here to say the chiefs got off light. 2nd rd pick this year, mid rd pick next year. kc has a lot of good pieces - a solid qb could make a huge difference. if you make 10 wins and the playoffs, that's a money trade by kc right there.

Pretty much my thoughts, but I'd go with 8 wins...which would be a 6 game improvement with a new coach & QB, which is significant.
