This is a 1991 velvet drive 1:1 on an 91 malibu. On the maiden voyage i noticed a little water coming from this area. I know a little is ok but it was pretty much a little stream. I took a pic of the drive shaft where i seen water coming in. Should there be a screw in the empty hole?

Is it pouring out full stream?

Is it part of a dry wet seal. Meaning it won't drip because there is a hose running from seal to the hull. Water keeps the seal wet, but doesn't get in the boat.

If it full blown sprays out of there, I'd say yes, but a bolt in it. But not until you really know why. I don't, sorry. Laughing

Replace your stuffing box packing recently?

Is there water coming out of that hole? That would be really strange since that is part of the coupler. If it is coming from further back where the shaft goes through the hull it needs to be adjusted or the rope packing needs replacement plus an adjustment. Do you know last time the rope packing (stuffing box packing) has been replaced?

Replacing the packing is less than $5, give that a try as it couldn't hurt before you go out. If there is no leak, problem solved.

My boat was doing the same thing, but the water comes from the stuffing box about 10 inches down the shaft from were the pic has been taken. It is VERY easy to adjust and/or replace the packing.
UNLESS NOTED LEAVE ENGINE OFF.
1st-leave boat on trailer and put it in the water so the leak comes back.
2nd-You need 2 pipe wrenches to loosen the packing lock-nut.
3rd-Slowly tighten the large nut until it just drips 1 to 5 drops per minute.
4th-Move tools and your hands from the shaft area and start boat.
5th-engage the drive and see how much it is leaking. DO NOT ADJUST WHILE DRIVE IS ENGAGED. Disengage and adjust in small increments then engage and do it again until it only leaks 1 to 3 drips per minute while drive is engaged.

Here is the link to the place that sells packing by the inch. (Duramax Ultra-X)
PM me if you need info on replacing the packing. I just did mine last week. Wink
