I'm going to put on my tin hat for a sec.
Did this guy really just snap or is it deeper than that? |

From what I've heard he was a standup guy, multiple purple hearts, family man, etc. I'd like to know too _________________ Dale - "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade -- THEN find someone who's life handed them vodka and throw one helluva party" |

I can tell you this: dude put in way more than his share of combat duty from what I have read. Nobody should have to do that many tours in war zones - especially these craptastic wars. _________________

the guy who scammed old people out of their retirement and joined the army to get out of town was a standup guy?
| Quote: | Bales’s decision to join the Army also came at a pivotal point in his pre-military career — a career as a stock trader that appears to have ended months after he was accused of engaging in financial fraud while handling the retirement account of an elderly client in Ohio, according to financial records.
An arbitrator later ordered Bales and the owner of the firm that employed him to pay $1.4 million — about half for compensation and half in punitive damages — for taking part in “fraud” and “unauthorized trading,” according to a ruling from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the independent disciplinary board for brokers and brokerage houses. |
| Quote: | | There is no indication that the civil ruling weighed on Bales in recent years. He never attended an arbitration hearing in the case — although he had been given legal notice of his right to present his version of events — and an attorney for Liebschner said it had been years since his client had attempted to collect the award from Bales. |

not sure why people use a purple heart as a measure of valor or honor. it simply means you were injured in a combat theater. |

I can't tell you whether or not Bales actually committed any wrongdoing in that case.
I can tell you that it's a pretty well known "fact" that registered rep vs. "little old lady" arbitrations are usually going to end badly for the rep. They can claim complete ignorance despite acknowledging they understand the risks - sometimes doing so in writing.
Again, don't know the specific circumstances with Bales. _________________

chavez, this is the damning part of that article in terms of "guilt", imo:
| Quote: | | A review of the investor’s account statements, obtained by The Washington Post, shows that valuable stocks were sold off in favor of penny stocks as part of what the arbitrator called “churning” by Bales to pump up commissions. |

jt09, that means very little to me. I've had the little old lady in the office demanding to be put into risky investments. Demanding! I don't think for a second that she wouldn't have played all stupid if it took a dump. This is what typically happens with the "little old lady" arbitrations. They acknowledge what they are doing in office, even sign off on it, then get amnesia when they are at the arbitration. It's terrible, and it ruins some good RR's lives.
A lot of this went on during the dot.bomb. People saw stuff go go go and they wanted in. Nevermind if they were not suitable or unsophisticated investors. They didn't want to hear it. Fine, there's the door go buy it elsewhere. There is a responsibility as the registered rep, to refuse assistance if a client asked for an unsuitable investment. They have options, they can go elsewhere if they really want to buy something speculative.
This is why I was extremely reserved during the housing boom. Same sh*t went on with RE agents and Mtg brokers. It was deja vu, just different "products".
Again, I am not saying Bates wasn't guilty, just saying there is typically much more than meets the eye in these proceedings, and reading just these limited reports is definitely not going to give the whole picture. _________________

Are you saying the media could be illustrating only part of the story to pull at the heart strings of the readers who are already emotionally charged on a story? No fuggin wai! _________________

I'm not entirely sure why we don't hand him over to the afghans.
We must have some sort of policy that we discipline our own criminals in an occupied land.

That's a big reason why the US was finally forced to pull out of Iraq. The Iraqi government refused to give immunity to US troops from prosecution. |

jt09, actually, he's correct as far as the accelerated timeline for withdrawal is concerned. _________________

So your telling me that the US being out of Iraq isn't soley based on Barak's pledge during his campaign. _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian? |

All I was noting was the timeline for withdrawal was accelerated largely because Iraq would not immunize our troops from local prosecution. Nothing more. _________________

we've been getting out of iraq for years now and lack of immunity merely moved up the date...back to the original date. once again, microman tries to parse the truth to make it look like something it isn't. |
