So I see that this thread is old and I didn't feel like picking through the whole thing to see if this has already been asked...Have you ever had a knee injury or pain before? Maybe you've flared up an old sports injury?

I have knee pains before, I have had them for a couple years now, but I have never had a knee injury. I used to play soccer when I was younger, but I only wakeboard now.

I'm no doctor but if these pains you experience while wakeboarding are similar to pains that you have had before then you have definitely flared up an old injury. I have experienced something similar to what you described as sharp pains but I have also had multiple knee dislocations on my right leg so your issue is likely very different from mine.

They are the same pains, but I have never injured my knees before. The sharp pains happen every now and then, just like you would get a muscle spasm, I get this sharp pain thats starts on the lower part of my knee and shoots up.

In all honesty this kind of sounds like a "growing" pain but doubtful. If this continues as you keep riding you should definitely see someone. Although wakeboarding does work muscles that are often hard to exercise it shouldn't cause sharp pains.

Yeah my mom was convinced that they were growing pains, but I am honestly not sure. My mom will only take me to go have it looked at when the pain is awful. (It took her a week to take me to the doctor to get the splint for my fractured arm.) Yeah wakeboarding makes me sore all over, but if I ride to longer than 10-15 at a time then my knee will literally shake so I cant stand.

Well not being able to stand sounds more severe than a simple shooting pain. I hope this ends up getting better as you keep riding or that you can find someone who can help.

Yeah both happen every now and then. Thanks for helping. I was told to build up the muscles around my knee to build up strength...your thoughts?? I am truly open to anything. I appreciate advice and criticism.

Well, like I said I have had multiple knee dislocations from ice hockey. I wear a prescribed knee brace when I ride or skate to protect my knee. I do try to lift 4 times a week when it's not riding season and I have found that biking and other low impact leg workouts help my knees the most for riding. I have also seen a physical therapist and have a set of stretches that works quite well for my knees.

Youtube has a number of rehabilitation type knee workouts/stretches that are quite useful.

Any doctor will tell you that the knee is not a joint made for sports like wakeboarding where you can experience sudden stops (crashes). As long as you ride within your ability and comfort level you should be okay.

Owww. My knee also pops like there is no tomorrow...everytime I bend it. Youtube has everything. I love to bike and I can feel it on my knees. I try not to push myself, but I have those days when I do because I am trying to learn something.

Certain kinds of biking can be really good for your knees, and your ankles as well. A buddy of mine who is a pro wakeboarder has struggled for years with meniscus damage. From time to time, he rehabs on a stationary bike. He sets the resistance very high and pedals slowly for 20-30 minutes.

When I sprained my ankle on an awkward fall, he suggested I try it. It was awesome! The workout itself felt great. It really loosened up the ankle and it wasn't painful. Pretty soon, the swelling subsided and I was back up to full strength. You might want to look into this for your knee pain.

I'm not a doctor and I don't know exactly what kind of damage you're dealing with, but the slow-biking workout seems to be very safe and effective for joint rehab.

Riding a staionary bike? Would that be better than an actual bike?

wakechick

Make sure you riding in the correct position, ride a little faster and do your best to more evenly weight your feet on your board you should start to reduce how quickly you get tired behind the boat. That will probably not fix all your issues with your knees as it sound like you have problems with your knees anyway. If you think you need help with getting your basics down there is a guy not to far from you that does lessons on Lewi.

I know when I first started riding my legs would get tired pretty fast and this helped.

Yes, but only because it gives you more control over the resistance. An actual bike would work well too.
