It looks like my wet sand and buff a couple years ago wasn't agressive enough...I'm seeing some haze resurface. So, I'm going to go for it again and am considering removal of the stripes, Supra logo, wave. I've seen several ideas on removal...would love to discuss again. What did you do?
haugy, I seem to recall you used the 3M eraser? Is that correct? How did that go and how agressive were you on your first wet sand step? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

On my old supra to remove the vinyl stripe and decal I used a heat gun from harbor freight. Also use goof-off in a spray can that stuff is amazing. _________________ There'll be two dates on your tombstone/ And all your friends will read 'em/ But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em... |

Heat gun to get the actual decal off.
3M eraser wheel on a drill (low speed setting is preferred)
Use the heat gun with one hand while peeling the other. Make sure the two stay close together. The closer you keep the heat gun to you pulling, the better your chances of getting the decal AND the adhesive up when you pull it.
Once done, you can use the Goo Off, but it takes much longer than the eraser wheel. When you use the eraser wheel, make sure its spinning against the direction you are moving, not with. Also DO NOT STAY IN ONE SPOT!!!! That wheel heats up really fast, and if you stay in one spot too long you can damage the paint/gelcoat. Make smooth passes with light pressure and it will come right off.
Wet sanding after: In theory, you have wet sanded your boat already so it shouldn't be too far off in color. Wet sanding again will most likely be required, but to what level you will have to decide. If it's way off, you may have to start at 1000 grit. With your boat you shouldn't need to go to 800 or 600. I've only had to go to 800 grit on one boat and that was for very severe damage. |

Thanks vette.
Thanks haugy. I'll start with 1000 grit and see how it does. Your red Mariah still had a bit of ghosting from the stripe, but really hard to see, right?
I had the boat at home this weekend and was washing some of it off with the pressure washer. I got it real close to the decal in one area to see what it would do and it flaked the color right off. The base layer of the decal is still there in that spot, though. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Okie Boarder, any chance you can get a little video of the process? I'm planning to wetsand my boat sometime soon too but never done it before. It's all probably simple as can be, but seeing how it's done will probably save me from a lot of trouble. _________________ FlyZone Wakeboarding Costa Rica |

Okie Boarder, yeah, but the ghosting effect was actually from the resin in the glue. Crazy huh? I got the boat so bright red, that the stripe barely showed up. I wetsanded plenty, but there was no fixing it. I finally gave up, and after a few years in the sun it was really hard to see.
This Supra I'm getting new silver stripes and wave logo put in place. I love the look of the stripes and logo, but hate the rainbow color. |

We had the same effect on our truck when we debadged. A couple of times buffing and waxing and we can hardly see it. I'm thinking I'll get it the best I can and if it bothers me enough I'll put new stripes and wave on. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Don't hate the rainbow!
Here's the progress on stripe removal so far. I thought we had a good heat gun at my work in OKC, but we don't. The only one I have at home is a little one for craft stuff. I tried with just the wheel last night for about 20 minutes and here are the results. Also I attached a picture of the rear section where you can see some of the haze I didn't get rid of with the first wetsand and polish process.
I'm glad I came back and looked at this thread. FlyZone CR, were you just wanting video of the wetsand process? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Well, since I never tackled a project like this any info is welcome, but yes I'm most interested in seeing some tips n' tricks on the wetsanding part. Thanks for asking! _________________ FlyZone Wakeboarding Costa Rica |

OK, so I finally got back to this project. I did a small section last year with a multi-step process and wanted to see how it would look and hold up. I've gotten going with it again and with some experimenting, I altered the process a little bit. I also opted to use an air sander to save my arms a bit. Here are a couple pictures showing one side with just the stripe removed and the other almost done. In the second picture you can see the hazy line in front of the nicely polished area. That is the are that has been sanded completely but not compounded yet. I think it is coming along nicely and will give me the results I was looking for.

I don't know why, but I am always taken aback by how good those old Supras look when well cared for...
Now, shut up and keep working Okie Boarder. Wax on wax off _________________
