So I'm moving to portland and need to fit in with the hipsters, so i thought I'd get a record player in order to do so...

In all reality. I've always wanted to start getting a record collection. It's a novelty I know, but I think it's neat. So where do I start? I want something that will be decently loud if i want it to be. Just curious as to what the best set up it for a record player now days?

When you get to Portland, drop in to Pearl A/V and pick this up.....

I'd rather have the Ayre DPS from the same store ... and I'm generally a huge McIntosh fan.

Not sure who sells them in Portland, but Sota makes an OK record player too.

I'm pretty sure you'd better start shopping for a fixie and some different footwear too. Why hipsters? Is it for the good, clean fun?

F8ck records. Real hipsters go 8-track.

Naw man, real hipsters only listen to music on a gramophone. It's just hard to carry on a fixie.

I've got two Tech 12 MKII's that I love: http://www.amazon.com/TECHNICS-SL-1200MK2-Automatic-Stereo-Turntable/dp/B00006I5VX

Plus a sizeable vinyl collection... not a hipster though Razz It's mostly electronic music and some hip hop.

b_girl, that's probably more than chad wants to spend on a "neat" record player

b_girl, for low cost turntables, those are great! For even less money, and a bit less quality, the Audio-Technica knock offs of those are also a good table to look into.

Still like the Sota, and really wish I could justify getting my hands on the Ayre I mentioned above.

The Ayre you mentioned looks cool, but doesn't have pitch control = big problem for me.
I guess we're not talking about what's good for me though, so maybe it would be perfect for what chad's going to use it for - does have a "neat" sort of quality to it.

If I want to listen to records, I just plug my MP3 player into my car with the jack 6/8ths of the way plugged in.

Hmm... I just play them backwards so I can hear what Satan is trying to tell me. I think you are doing it wrong.

Q: What do you get when you play a country 'n western song backwards?
A: You get your dog back, your job back, your wife back...
