ATT email has been hacked twice in the last 4 days, and now recently my fb was hacked. Not sure how this is happening? I dont have any passwords written down or stored anywhere except in my brain, no body else has ever had access to my pass words and they are different for each account containing upper/lower case letters, and numbers.

I dont think its personal because i doubt any of my friends are smart enough to hack my stuff. I dont leave my accounts signed in either.

Any suggestions as to what I should do? I am contemplating deleting both accounts and starting new ones but as you know losing all those contacts is crucial.

Has any one else been hacked recently? One of my good friends had their email and fb hacked the same day email was first hacked.

Hacking passwords is relatively easy. What are they doing with your accounts? This will give you some idea of how they are doing it.

I manage security for a large IT department. It isnt typical for two of your services to get hacked in the same day. When this happens usually its one of two things. The first is that you have a trojan on your PC and someone is trying to pull enough personal identification for an ID scam. The second is that someone you know, that can attach to your LAN and or wireless network is running a program like Cain and Abel.

I would run a virus and malware scan first to see if it catches anything. If it doesnt I would then make security adjustments to your home network.

In the end there are databases of hundreds of thousands of users pcs that have been hacked that are available for purchase. You might have had a trojan for some time and just now your PC has been sold and is being used as a drone. That is far fetched by what you described but it does happen.

Sounds like you have a keylogger installed on your pc. Malware/Spyware

Download http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and run the free scan.

Im still not sure what they are doing with my accounts I havent been able to get into my att email since yesterday and I locked my fb because that is the email account that it is connected with.

I do have norton anitvirus on my computer and everytime I do the scan it just comes up with cookies. Ive heard norton isnt the greatest but im no expert with computers.

Tbonez, What kind of security adjustments would you make? My house is run off of wireless and I have 2 other roomates that havent been hacked... or atleast yet. Also this might be a dumb question but how would a trojan get on my computer would that be from downloading things online? I hardly do that just the occasional picture that really stands out for a good desktop bg.

Quick fix.

Step 1) Run MalwareBytes (full scan) and a full virus scan (I like MSE).
Step 2) Stop browsing PR0N!!!!
Step 3) PROFIT!!!!

Or run avast and continue with the porn browsing. Also shut off your pc when not in use. Cuts the chances of getting hacked drastically. If your one of those people who think shutting down all the time is bad, disable your internet connection when not in use. Online=chance for hacking and virus attack. I cannot stress this enough. Somebody has to create the virus and run it before somebody creates the countermeasure for it. If you're online all the time than you may just be the lucky recipient of the latest and greatest attack that doesn't have a cure yet

The easiest is to add Mac level security for your wireless as I'm assuming you are running wpa. Depending on your router and switch model you may have the ability to run port level security. This will prevent a man in the middle (arp poison) connection in which another pc pretends to be your router. In this scenario all packets destined for the Internet are filtered through another pc. This method is used a great deal by nosey significant others because it's easy and fast.

Depending on your knowledge level you can run a netstat at a dos prompt. That will tell you what you are connected to and what is connecting with you. If you know what the connections should be you can quickly tell what is wrong...

If this is too difficult you can always run a software firewall and enable a connection check. Anytime an application wants access to your registry or to open outbound/inbound ports it will request your permission. If you go this route you have to make a conscious decision to not just click OK every single time it ask. You need to google the request and see if it is a legitimate program. Most of the times valid port request will only occur when a new application that you are trying to install is being installed.

Unfortunately this is true...Unless you want to spend the money on an intrusion system that looks at the actual packet for modification and or injection you are relying on the antivirus company to discover and write a signature for a virus. The virus companies are pretty good. All of them ask you to participate in their virus program...If anything odd is going on or spreading they get a great deal of data to review and write a signature for their customers..Most of them claim "zero day"...They also have honey pots on the internet that are completely unprotected to attract any new virus.

In the next five years consumer grade ids/ids (intrusion prevention) will be common. It doesn't matter because if someone good wants you they are going to get you..see lockheed, Sony, marshals, Zappos, Iran (lol)...

Tbonez
Yeah unfortunatley im not that savy with computers, I wish I was... It sucks feeling kind of useless against stuff like this. Are passwords really that easy to crack? Even If i come up with some really long ones with upper case/lower case and numbers?

Its not that they are that easy to crack with brute force, its more that they are easy to acquire. When you have a good aquisition method, it doesnt matter how complex the password is.

For example, have you ever been logged into Facebook looking around and suddenly had to re-log in? Many times its because the links on your friends pages are trying to get your password. You click on the link and it comes to some hackers page that he has designed to look exactly like the facebook login. You enter your credentials and it stores them, and returns you to your homepage. It then adds to your wall the same link that was on your buddies wall. Now he has your password and opportunity to get anyone who trusts you and clicks on the link on your wall.

The reason I asked what they were doing was to rule out a buddy who installed a keylogger on your machine. It monitors keystrokes so it gets your password as you type. If this "hacker" is randomly posting as you about how awesome one of your friends is, I would go looking for that friend.

And finally, most people who claim to have been "hacked" or claim they "must have a virus" werent and dont. Most just fat fingered their password or forgot they changed it, and have installed apps that conflict with one another.

jason_ssr, ah true ive had the re log in page pop up a couple of times but i exed out of the window and reopened in a new window. Ive always been sketchy about any window that opens asking for info... thanks for the advice.

I got back into all of my accounts today and changed all my passwords and security questions. Im going to turn my airports off when not in use from now on... thanks for the help everyone!

What I find weird is that I dont think they did anything with my accounts? Doesnt appear that anything was sent or opened?

Do people out there do this just to annoy others or see if they can pull it off?

This just reassures me thoughts that anything really important shouldnt be saved on email and keep alot of information off of fb.. (which I do anyways)
