Once you have the basics down (getting up.....getting in an out of the wake), what is a basic first trick to learn?

w2w jumps heelside and toeside, regular and switch, then grab the w2w jumps and work on all the 180's

I would get your ollies down. They are the base of so many other things.

surface fs 180, you spin the board 180 degrees frontside without going into the air.
lean back, spin the board by pushing the handle to your back hip, enjoy riding switch.

I'd go with Goosage. Start with surface 180s, and get used to riding around switch. Then start working on progressive edging, and jumping heelside.

+1 for the surface 180. It is a fairly easy thing to learn, and yet it opens that little door to a world of opportunity later....ollie spins and w2w spins and switchstance riding.

LEARN TO RIDE SWITCH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

I teach a lot of beginners and first timers. Once we get them up and riding, I always start with edging and sliding before we ever move on to air tricks. When your board is on the water's surface it is either edging or slding. Master these first. Learn to edge regular and switch. Learn to slide and do surface 180s. These are the fundamental building blocks of wakeboarding and are the first step in the progression to big air tricks, including ollies and W2W.

Slowing the boat down on your first surface 180 attempts will greatly reduce the impact of face plants. I highly recommend this.

They aren't the base of anything... I don't have sliders in my area but that's about all that ollies are useful for. You can also do your switch with an ollie rather then on the surface I guess.

Very first thing to do after getting up is carving drills and surface 180's. I like the 4 minute drill.

It is also a great way to warm up and loosen up before getting into any tricks or jumps.
