I have found meeting, watching, hanging and even riding with the big names that grace the covers of magazines so much more prevalent then surfing or skating. I haven't wakeboarded near as long as I have surfed and I have only met a pro surfer once at Surf Expo. I have talked to Scott Byerly a few times and just Last week I was standing next to Shane Bonifay on the dock at ODub, during busy happy hour too. And during the meet and greets at Wake Games the pros are so nice and easy to chat with. Just thought I would share and see if others have had the same good experiences...

agreed! shaun murray comes down to lake murray each summer for wakeboarding with the pro's and hangs out with us and is very chill. Last summer after eating dinner with us he even brought out his guitar and sang some songs for us.

yea man... everyone is super chill. If you go to any of the pro tour stops, all of the pros just walk around amongst the crowds. If you didn't know who the pros were, you would just think they were another spectator. Also, riding at Odub gives you like a 90% chance of seeing a pro lol. They ride there all the time. Once i was there riding watching Bob Soven, Shane Bonifay, and Dallas Friday tear it up on the cable around me

Yup, this is one of my favorite things about wakeboarding. That's the way it should be!

This is something that really had an impact on me growing up. None of my friends wakeboarded and all I ever knew was from videos and magazines. I basically grew up doing it on my own with help from my dad giving me pulls. I went to my first pro tour stop for my birthday and got to meet Erik Ruck, Parks, Shaun Murray, and Dallas and they were all super awesome (I think this was 2002? It was the year Ruck won the pro tour). It was the first time I was able to talk wakeboarding and have people actually understand what I was going on about.

That kind of personality in the sport is a HUGE reason why I stuck with it. It really had an impact on me when I was younger and stuck with me even till now.

Overall I agree - the wake culture is pretty grounded. I occaisionally run into some of the pros and they are always great encounters for me and my family. this certainly sets a good example for the younger members of my crew.
