Let me start off by saying this site is awesome and the sticky about the budget wakeboarding boats is awesome.

I have done some research but I would like someone to do a little clarification for me on a number of questions I have.

What is the benefit of V Drive versus D Drive for wakeboarding?

Can anyone explain to me the types of wakes? I had read a thread about someone who had posted pictures of wakes from a Moomba.

I do not see any information on Moomba on this site. I did see a few thread about them and I was curious why they are not talked about more on this webpage?

I am new to wakeboarding and I currently ride behind a 2001 Bayliner 2050 Capri. There is no tower and I get pulled from the tow thing on the back of the boat. I have never been behind a boat with a tower or ballasts or anything like that. Can anyone give me some insights on the differences?

I am looking to buy my own boat next summer and I am trying to make the best decision.

Sorry for the lengthy first post, and thanks in advance!

To answer your question about V-Drive compared to a Direct Drive.
- An inboard boat with a direct drive will have the motor in the middle of the boat. There will be the motor, transmission, drive shaft.
- A V-Drive boat the motor will be turned 180* and pushed to the back of the boat similar to an I/O that you already have. There will be the motor facing backwards, a transmission and a V-Drive that does just as a sideways letter V. The drive shaft will come up through the bottom of the boat and will bolt th the coupler on the bottom side of the V-Drive, the motor and transmission bolt to the top of the V-Drive. The V-Drive enables the motor to be tucked away and allows for a bigger open floor plan on a boat.

The wake on V-Drive is usually better because the motor is not in the middle of the boat, but at the back. This puts more weight at the back of the boat compared to a direct drive and produces a bigger wake.

There are several benefits and drawbacks to a V-Drive.
Pros: More storage and room in the boat, bigger wake, no motor hatch to walk around. easier to set up for wakesurfing.
Cons: More moving parts and fluids to check. Not fun to work on if the motor, tranny, or V-Drive has something go wrong.

I cant answer to the different wake shapes each brand and model a boat produces, But a tower makes wakeboarding so much better. It allows for easier deep water starts and doesnt pull you down when jumping W2W.

V drive gives you more space in the interior. and a better ability to hide ballast. but is not needed. especially for a first boat. (mine was a 83 SN2001 as suggested in the budget guide)

you have two types of wakes, rampy and peaky.
rampy wake is just like a ramp, think of a triangle skate board ramp. has a longer transition into the wake. allitle more forgiving and typically a slightly longer and lower pop to the boarder.
the peaky wake (nautiques known for this) is more like a quarter pipe skate board ramp. a shorter transition and a more vertical lip. will give a very vertical abrupt pop to the boarder.

i was the poster of the moomba wake pics. yes moombas are looked down apon because they are not from the big 3. malibu, nautique, and mastercraft. they are considered value boats. but are very nice. but make your budget and brand descisions on your own. always keep in mind this is the internet. and this is also somewhat of a richmans sport. just check out the boats on your own and make your own decisions.

the tower will make it easier to stay aloft, as the rope is not pulling you down back to the water. the ballast makes the wake bigger. both combined just makes for more air time and allitle less effort have to be given to acheive the same pop. more time for tricks, and less speed needed.

If I take pictures of my wake, can you identify what type of wake my boat is making?

I deffinatly like the look of the V-Drive bettter. I like the large platform because it should give some room for girls to tan Laughing

its a malibu thing. its a scoop that pulls the back of the boat down.
gives bigger wake without the ill effects of the weight of ballast.
