I'm planning to buy an 08 x1 here in the next week or so and i'm just looking to get opinions about these boats. it's pretty much fully loaded and also has the MCX engine

how's the wake?
how do you properly weight these boats?
how is the surf wake?
is there any common issues?

Great boat. Wake is awesome. You will want to remove the rear hard tanks and replace them w 500lb locker sacs first and buy a bow triangle sac and a tsunami pump. With all of that full the wake will be killer at 70-75ft at 23.5 mph.

I usually ride at 22mph at 65ft, does speeding up and going back further make a difference? if so, what does it do?

The wake is pretty narrow behind an x1 so most people ride 70+. You only need to go faster if you run a bunch of extra weight.

what is the purpose of putting weight in the front of a boat? to me it seems more in the back would make a bigger wake

The purpose of putting weight in the bow would be to help clean up the wake and to help the boat plane out. When you load just the transom of the boat, yes the wake is bigger however you lose that clean crisp wake. Ultimately you shoot for a 60/40 weight distribution. 60% in the rear and 40% up front. The wake tends to wash out when too much weight is in the back. Hope this clarifies this, if not some others can chime in and explain it a little better.

Exactly this.

Removing the rear hard tanks and replacing with 500s is extremely easy and well worth it. I use that, fill the middle, 520lbs of Pops lead bags in the nose and a 400lb sac on the seat. Perfect every time.

I have the same boat. Weight in the bow is key. Yes it cleans up the wake but it also firms up the wake which i think is the most important thing.

Chattwake mentions take the hard tanks out. I actually feel the opposite. The hard tanks are about 200-250 lbs. I have another 150-200 lbs of lead on either side of the engine as well. That way I still have all the storage but don't have a bunch of hoses and large fat sacs back there. The boat doesn't have a ton of storage, so losing any storage in that boat is an issue for me.

Throw a 350-500 lb sac in the bow walk way and your good to go.

Bambamski has a point. If you need a bunch of storage, the lead route might be smart. The 500 sacs take up pretty much all the space when full.

My lake doesn't require you to be too far from your cabin at any time. We usually don't have to load up on supplies for the day so I only need to fit ropes and vests in the back.

Two schools of thought here. I personally like my boat as light as possible when empty. I don't like leaving lead in my boat when I'm not riding. I hate hard tanks too because I had one crack in my '02 XStar and a friend of mine had a tank crack in his '07 X1. Also, as for storage, when the tanks are removed and the bags are empty, you have much more storage in the rear hatches. Lastly, with Bambiski's setup, you would really need to move the lead from one hatch to another to setup the boat correctly for surfing. With my setup, you just fill the sack on the side you want to surf on and throw another sack on the same side on the rear seat.

Another vote for Chattwake's set-up: 400-500 in each hatch, fill up the bow and ski locker and you're pretty much golden. Integrated triangle sac like the one below is a MUST if you want to keep all your weight hidden (I hate sacs being in the way, especially in a small boat).

http://www.amazon.com/Fly-High-Pro-Integrated-Bow/dp/B000HZZ44A

I'm not a lead fan (same reason as Chatt; I like having it light when not boarding/trailering), but I did have like 150# underneath the triangle sac in the bow. That way I wouldn't have to fill the up the triangle sac so much that it popped up the bow cushions and made sitting there awkward.

i don't mind weight in the boat when I'm towing, i guess that's why i bought a big truck so it wouldn't be an issue.

Chattwake,

actually, that set up works pretty well for surfing as well. We just move people around. The key to surfing the starboard side of that boat is to have someone hanging off the starboard side of the boat hanging onto the tower. (like sailing and hanging over the side kind of idea) The boat is so narrow you can "tip" it to the side a bit which cleans up the wave and the rooster isn't as bad. Just a trick and set up that works for us. It's not ideal on that side but it's better then nothing...

Gotcha. Where I live and with the friends I have, I would get arrested in about .02 seconds if I was seen driving with someone hanging off the tower and/or one of my drunk friends would probably just end up falling in the lake and drowning.

we just got our 6th day in a row of snow... We don't get on the water till May typically anyways but the snow can stop anytime!!!!!

CHattwake laugh. I think this year I'm going to get my kiteboarding harness and attach it to the tower. I think that will work great for hanging off the side. I've never actually seen a cop on the water where we go ever. We also don't drink on the boat so that's never been an issue.
