Set a new personal record for lowest combined air/water temp for boat riding last week.
Air: 47
Water:36
Total: 83
Lake had ice on both shorelines in our normal run...had to turn around halfway down the cove because the cove was frozen all the way across several inches thick. Pretty cold, but it was great to get out there in February.
If youve never ridden over sheet ice on a wakeboard, its pretty crazy. Think scraping an icy run on a snowboard but louder and rougher.
Dude, that's impressive. I think the coldest I have ever done was the second weekend last may in West Michigan. I think the water was around 45. I was putting my dock in and just couldn't resist going out. I was pretty timid though. Didn't want to fall because all I had on were boardshorts and a vest. _________________
Dang LFADAM - you've inspired me - should be 47 here next Sat, and I saw ice on the water when I flew over it last week... Guess I should man up and go hit it.
For us it's pretty normal, this time of year we ride in 38 water and 36 air, lowest we've ridden in would be maybe 36 + 25.
The height of summer for us last year was about 60 and 64. We have no heating in the boat and usually go out for a few hours at a time, we take flasks of coffee and warm water and wear drysuits.
Where do you live??? That's even shittier then our weather. How does the water temp get to 60 if the air temp highs are only 64?
you should pick up another sport. At least in the Frozen north where I'm at lakes around here will be in the 70's and air gets in the low 80's... Head west and we high 70's lake and air temp in the mid 90's _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash...
They were the averages last year, we get the odd burst of decent weather and we can see spells quite high, we had a few days in May last year when it got into the 80's but it's a bit random and generally it was mid 60's.
The problem is cloud cover, less than 20 miles from the sea sitting within the mountains we're almost always covered by cloud and get lots of rain with very little sunny spells.
Our big benefit over you is probably that it doesn't change massively for much of the year meaning we ride 10 months a year, some ride all year round, we don't get the real lows that you probably get.
EDIT - and it nearly always looks like this in a morning so we've little to complain about.

Ok...I'll play. I am just a girl but I set my personal record in 2008 for Freeze for Life. This is wakeboarding in Wisconsin in December. You are only allowed one pull and it is too damn cold to really ride and go big but it was such a rush! It was awesome to get on a board in those conditions but my hands and feet had no feeling for about 30 minutes afterwards (even WITH soaking in the hot tub!). I wore a dry suit - some young studs flat out trunked it. Would I do it again? You bet!!
Lizrd, what body of water is that in WI? We freeze up in wausau around thanksgiving time or shortly before it. I would totally go for a ride in december - no doubt! Thats about the time I'm starting to miss it and start itching for the next best distraction - snowboarding.
PS that shot of the dock is awesome.
bradtw191, throughout the season when it starts getting too cold we do the drain thing where you pull the knock sensors (drain plugs) and drain it, maybe burp the engine a bit. At least thats what we did on my 89 sunsetter. I'm expecting I can do the same thing with the LSV we just got - someone correct me if I'm wrong.
But typically you can just drain the block and then when you're really ready to put it away - like in november or what have-you then you go full out with the antifreeze full biggy style winterization. I'm really assuming I can still do the drain thing and it'll be alright if it freezes. _________________ Today is a chance to become a greater person than the person we were the day before.

This is what we do.
Last weekend it was about 42f, not bad for this time of year, riding all next week so hoping for the same.

You will be very cold in 50 deg water in a shorty, but you wont die. I consider myself pretty good with cold water but I dont like to go shorty below 60. Ive done 50s but its pretty cold.
A 4:3 wetsuit would be suitable for water in the 50's. This has been my go to. Your hands are the thing that gets cold, just keep them out of the water and you will be fine. Don't get me wrong, its still cold but its all worth it if you get to ride.
also we went out last weekend - not as epic as some of the others but our combined air/lake temp was at 90 - we'll be going out tomorrow for certain probably not much better. glad I did the heater and the shower in the boat - really nice to extend the season and start it earlier... if there's any locals I'll give them a pull if they have the stones
