Long story short. The wife blew the engine in my truck (2003) and now I need another one. New Diesel engine is 11k a rebuild is around 7k all in, and my truck with a working engine is only worth maybe 10k.

I'm looking for a 2009 or 2010 Ford F350 short box crew cab.

I'm looking all over the place but there's a better selection stateside for sure and the price is right for most of the trucks.

Is there a better website then others to search for trucks?
autotrader.com

I've looked on craigslist. what else is there?

Ebay doesn't have much.

What do the texan's use to find their vehicles? Texas seems to be long trucks and are well priced.

I've found some decent ones out there. 09 Harley Davidson in Utah ect ect.

As long as you're going all the way stateside I would recommend searching around craigslist ads from the southern states. Everyone has a truck and there's no rust.

I don't know how google does their searches. When I just do a google search it really just brings up trucks and listings from closer to home here.

I would prefer buying something inthe southern states for sure. Anywhere they don't put salt on the roads.

I searched craigslist in Phoenix and Las Vegas but hardly anything showed up there. I figured with most people being under water on their house in that area there would be a lot more repos potentially? They had 5-6 trucks on the website compared to much more in say a seattle. That's why I was wondering if there's different websites to search in different cities that work better then others?

I have used autotrader down here (Dallas/Fort Worth) to find a price range on a car, but never a specific car.

I am also in the market for a new vehicle after putting my SUV on it's side Sunday. I found that cars.com is a decent resource in addition to autotrader. There is some overlap between the two but there are also some different listings too.

I purchased a Duramax at the beginning of December and had the best luck searching through cars.com, autotrader, and eBay listings. I ultimately found the truck on cars.com from a dealer in Arkansas. I also searched through craigslist around Dallas, Houston and a few other Texas cities along with Tulsa and Oklahoma city. I did take me about two months to find exactly what I wanted.

Are you looking for a single rear wheel or a dually? I will keep my eyes open and let you know if I see anything.

I am also looking for a used suv in. I am in Houston, and have looked at cars.com, autotrader, eBay, and craigslist. There aren't many to choose from and prices are high now. There is a guy in Dallas that goes to dealer auctions and can find what you are looking for. www.alttx.com is his website. The only bad thing is you don't know what is at each weeks auction until the day before.

Question for those who buy cars located in states that are far away from their home... Do you guys have the car shipped to you? If so how much does it cost? I have found some cars that I'm interested in but their quite a ways away, and I can't justify the time/money it would involve to travel down and drive it back myself. I always assumed it would be a grand or two to have it transported here, negating any benefit of a better "deal" I may get elsewhere.

Fortunately the dealer that had the truck I purchased was only a 2.5hr drive. I was actually planning on flying to the locations as I can fly with my job for less than $100 and I could not buy a vehicle sight unseen after hearing many horror stories regarding the condition of some vehicles. Also I had some friends/family in a lot of the locations I happened to be looking that would check out a vehicle before jumping on a plane.

cars.com is pretty good.

I found a truck pretty close by and a family member can check it out for me.

I think it's a pretty good price 43k 2010 with 13000 miles on it. It's a single axle F250 crew cab, short box Lariat as loaded as they come I think. Bed liner, back up camera, sun roof, nav, the Ford Cinc (sp) ect ect.

it's an F250 though, vs my F350 I had before. I don't think going from a one ton to a 3/4 is a big deal for me. It's not a work truck, I only use it really to head to the mountains snowboarding and pulling my boat in the summer. I don't have a 5th wheel trailer. Does anyone see an issue with not getting the 350?

Bambamski, looks like you got good suggestions already. If you need to check out anything in the Dallas or OKC area, let me know.

Another real easy craigslist search tool is www.statewidelist.com

Searches all of craigslist in each state and does province wide searching in Canada.

Shows eBay ads also if you are interested in those. Good luck!

So how did you wife blow up the engine? Did she try to run gas through it.

long story.... I'll hit the highlights

The wifes grandfather passed away last week so My wife and daughter drove down Thursday morning to Utah for the funeral. We took the truck in for an oil change Wednesday and get it checked over, everything looked good. (son in law works for ford but isn't a diesel tech but had the diesel guy look it over)

About three hours into the trip the engine started knocking a little bit and emitting black smoke. She called my Son in law (SIL) and he said they put an engine cleaner in the truck because the ERG sensor was a bit dirty and that was normal. He told her to watch the gauges and let him know if there was any loss of power. There wasn't so they figured nothing was wrong.

They go to Helena, and it was still spueing black smoke and they had burned basically a tank of gas in 3 hours or so, not normal at all. The gauges still looked fine, and engine temp was normal with no loss of power. The Diesel tech said it might have some carbon stuck in the ERG sensor and to floor it a couple of times to see if there is some carbon stuck in there or something. Shortly after that the truck started to really knock (engine) and it was shaking with speeds anything over 50mph. She pulled into Jefferson city (not really a city) with no services and only a Tavern where the truck just died. Wouldn't start again and a little bit of steam was coming from the hood.

They managed to get a tow truck driver out there which got them to his garage in Boulder Montana. Boulder has a gas station, motel and a pizza place. IT's happening there let me tell ya. The Boulder Montana guy looks at it and thinks there is a rip in one of the hoses coming from the Turbo into the engine by the Oil pressure sensor part. He talks to the SIL and the Diesel tech and they figure the truck lost pressure because of the rip in the hose and it screwed up the Oil pressure sensor which shut the truck down. They are in Boulder, so no parts in Montana, Idaho or Washington that they can find. We have the parts in Calgary though!!

So I went by the dealership, grabbed the parts and drove them down at 8pm Thursday night getting to the lovely Boulder Montana motel around 3am. Keep in mind, the wife is freaking out, the truck is broke, she's stranded in Boulder and her grandfather's funeral is in a day now.

Mechanic guy puts the parts in and the truck and it still doesn't start. So we hook the truck back up to the tow truck and he tows it to Helena which is about 35 or so miles. My bill for this guy is now 470 bucks. Awesome

The Dealership doesn't look at the truck till about 1pm. Buddy can't get the truck started. The computer says that the number 4 cylinder doesn't have full pressure but it doesn't say how much it's under for some reason. He has to pull the head gasket off which reveals the glow plug being basically cut in half, half is missing. That's not good. He does an actual compression test which shows no pressure in the number 4 cylinder.

ENGINE IS SHOT. So what he figures, the injector was stuck open, therefore basically just dumping diesel into the cylinder which would cause the truck to burn black smoke and burn a ton of Diesel. Also checks the oil and it has Diesel in the oil and is reading 3 quarts too much. So Diesel is dumping into the cylinder it overheated and blew the injectors and the cylinder is the theory.... Oh the best part. A new diesel engine from the dealer is 10,700 dollars. It's a 2003 F350 worth at the most 9 or 10k. My bill at the Dealership is 350 bucks. 3.5 hours...

It's now 4:30, the wife has missed the family vewing (wake) now, we are still 8 hours from Salt Lake too. I haven't slep in 36 hours and I offer to drive so she can make the funeral but we'd have to drive back home Sunday.

She says lets just go home. So we drove home getting back to Calgary about midnight Friday night.

The Truck is still in Helena and as far as i know the engine is shot. I need a truck as a second vehicle as my Vette and Mustang aren't the best cars to drive in Calgary winters....

So I bought a truck this morning.

2010 F250. I pick it up Monday at the border. Sucks when you haven't planned on buying a new truck and you have to drop 40k plus at the drop of a hat....

I have the exact same truck: crew cab, swb, lariat, navigation, sunroof, sync, heated seats, back up sensors, back up camera, remote start, trailer brakes, upfitter switches, 20" wheels, FX4 (assuming yours is an FX4) and got it new in 2/2010 for 48 or 49k and I think sticker was 51something. 43k seems a little high, especially since they changed so much for 2011, but you're probably more in tune with what they're going for now. The rear springs are pretty weak for a 3/4 ton, with much weight on the hitch it squats pretty bad. I added air bags to the rear to level it out. The mileage sucks. I added a 70 gallon auxiliary tank in the bed so I don't have to fill up everyday. I can go about 350 highway miles on the internal tank, quite a bit less in town. I was cutting it close to make it in town to a gas station but the DTE showed I had about 20 miles to spare. Well, then it cleaned the exhaust filter and I ran out of diesel about 4 miles short. It took about 2 hours to get it restarted after putting 5 gallons of diesel in on the side of the road. There's no way to bleed the fuel system so you're supposed to cycle the key on and off about 20 times according to the owners manual. After cycling the key several hundred times and not getting it to start, I started it and kept it running on starting fluid until ran on its own. It clearly warns not to use starting fluid on it, but I had had enough. To me, the seats are uncomfortable after extended periods of time. My next truck will probably be a GMC Denali HD.

Most of the 2010's i've seen on the internet stateside were going for between 42-47k. I don't think i saw many that were as loaded as this truck though. The MSRP paper on the window up here in the Frozen north shows these trucks in the 69k range. With all the rebates and cash back deals from Ford it's still a 59k brand new truck up here. Ya I know, we get screwed. My price includes the cost of getting it up here and all the federal and provincial inspections as well. I have everything but the FX4 package on mine.

I'm not too worried about the "sagging" back end as the most I tow is probably 5000 lbs. 350 miles is probably about what I'd get from my 2003 i think . Give or take a couple of miles so that's not too bad.

I had the Yukon back in the day and i can never go back to a GM 1/2 ton type product. I'm sure they're better now but my experience with anything that isn't built to tow (2500 or 250/350) is a POS and won't last in the long run. I'm ok with scacrificing a little comfort for the knowledge that my Tranny or Diff isn't going to crap out after 100k.

Pick up the truck tonight hopefully. Apparently it hasn't shown up yet, but it's on the way.
