Does this photo show an acceptable drain plumbing of a washing machine and utility sink? Meaning there is no vent directly after utility sink.

| Maybe, depends on the vent size and where it is located. It could still be ok.

I have a 1.5 inch vent that will be within 5' of sink p-trap.

I don't think it will pass the International Plumbing Code... It would be either 3 or 4 drainage fixture units (dfu), which requires a 2" vent for both the common vent and wet vent options. BUT even though I have done my fair share of reading it, venting is one of the most confusing sections. If it is any comfort, worse case scenario all that will happen is the utility sink may gurgle a bit when the washing machine is draining water.
However, getting the inspector to pass it may be a different story, as venting has some pretty big gray areas.
Also, what I currently have in my house is the washer drains just dump directly into the utility sink... not sure if this is code or not, but it works

From what I have read I don't think it is right either.
What is crazy though is the picture is out of a book on plumbing.

No it is not. There should be a vent off of both of them. you could then tie them together into one vent above the flood level of the sink. Check your local codes and see it auto air vents are allowed in your area. There are also limits on the length of the stand pipe of I believe 18-30" and minimum distance for the trap off of the floor which I think is 12".

The size and the location of the vent are absolutely the most important things to consider. It is just a matter of requirements for the vent and it needs to have four drainages. Anyway, it is advisable for you to use a bigger vent for that.
