Austin people - school me

Without playing 50 questions, can the Austin folks direct me to a place where I can learn as much about the area as possible? Not neccessarily the good bars, restaurants, etc... but more about the different sections/neighborhoods around the city to live.
The wife and I are considering a move and Austin is at the top of the list but we aren't sure what areas to start looking.
Looking for an area near decent lake living, good schools, family friendly, lots of recreation and nice neighborhoods. We're hoping to find a newer home (either 3/3 or 4/3) for about $250,000 that isn't too far from the city.
Any insight is appreciated or guide me to any resources

what's bringing you to austin? if it's a job, what part of town is the business? traffic matters bigtime, imo.

I would say traffic in Austin is the only thing that matters. you cannot live in the south east and work in the north west. You will never make it to work in under an hour unless you start at 5am. Good luck.

I live in South Austin and Boardstop/Wakeboarder.com is far North. My solution.. Sleep until 10am....then go to work.

Mopac traffic in the morning sucks and after work.

With the new 45 toll way you can get from Cedar Park to the Dell area really fast.

Steiner ranch out bye lake Travis offers the best of Lake Travis and Lake Austin and has an awesome school system. Also Apache Shores. 250k I think you can find something, might have to go a bit higher. Apache Shores for sure.

South Austin and North Austin are really different. Different people, different attitude
