Hi all
I have an opportunity to get a new 2010 Assault on a trade from a friend. However here is where I'm concerned.
I've been riding for over a year and have progressed nicely (now into my 2nd season). I have no problems edging in and out of the wake both heel and toe. This season I've started to learn jumps. Every so often I can jump w2w and land it. I think part of my problem is that I always use friends setups which aren't always tailored to me (most are taller with bigger feet)
I was looking for my own board now and one I can progress to the next level and grow into skill wise as opposed to out of. Will the Assault be ideal or too advanced for me?
My friend has a 53 and 55 (he has way too much money haha) that I can trade for. I'm 163-165 pounds. If the board will serve me well, which size should I get.
I would appreciate any honest opinions. If the board is too advanced I have no problem with stepping down to a less advanced board (even if I have to pay for it...lol).
Thanks much |

55. It's a 141, the 53 is like a 136, which is a bit small for you. _________________

This. You could pull off the 53 if you like, but would most likely be better off with the 55 if you are about 6 feet or taller. _________________ Keep Austin Weird |

Thanks.
Oops sorry for not listing it earlier...I'm only 5'7". Do you still recommend the 55? |

EC99SS, Its really kind of preference. I have ridden everything from 131 to 143 and I always seem to like the bigger boards. Having a little more board under you give you some forgiveness that you don't get with a smaller board. The only real downside is a bigger board will be a bit tougher to spin if your working on 3's or 5's but aside from that, I'd rather have the extra length. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

Intotheflats -
Thanks for the input. Yes it's the tried and true dilema similar to snowboarding. Shorter boards have advantages and disadvantages as do longer ones.
Since I'm learning jumps this season, I don't expect to start on the 5's. I do think I will be able to nail a 3 at least once this season (after many face and ass plants haha). I believe once I get a setup tailored to me under my feet I will be able to land the w2w more consistently (instead of borrowing friends who are all taller, heavier and much bigger feet).
The one lasting question no one answered yet is whether or not this board will serve me well in taking me to the next level in skill. Or is it too advanced at this point? I dont' know much about Byerly other than hearing it's a "sick" board.
For reference I've always purchased advanced snowboards (even when I was a beginner years ago). I have progressed quickly in that realm and the boards always served me well (now an advanced rider). I'm progressing as quickly with wake so I'm assuming I'd be OK. But wanted others more experienced to chime in with their advice.
Thanks!

EC99SS, As with most Byerly boards, they are very advanced boards and will definitely help you. It will be different than many boards out there but once you get used to it, you'll probably love it. I know I did. I bought my first byerly design when he was still with Wake Tech and then bought his first Hyperlite release too and I LOVE the way his boards ride. But not everyone does.
Have you ever ridden either of the two that your friend has? If not, I would try to ride one first and you'll know right away if you like that style of board or not. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

Thanks. No I have not yet tried as he is not local to me (unfortunately). I know this may be a difficult question to answer, however would you be able to give me some generalities in terms of Byerly's riding style characteristics? Is it fast? Non-forgiving (ie edge bites)? Freestyle oriented or more freeride? etc etc. Sorry if I'm not using the correct terms.
Thanks! |

I have a 55 2010 assault.
It feels slower cutting compared to my old subjekt, pops higher, and the landings are softer. It is not a forgiving board and I have slammed my face/back in a few times. _________________ I wakebaord, wakeskate,do anythign stupid, hurt others and have fun doign it. |
