I took a fall last night and the back of my knee started hurting. Didn't hear or feel a pop and it wasn't extreme pain but I quit riding and iced it right anyway. Now this morning I woke up and couldn't straighten it or put pressure on it. After a few hours it has loosed up and I have about 75% range of motion and only hurts when I try to straighten it all the way. There is a little swelling but it's not over the top.
Any ideas on what it could be and if good old fashion Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation would treat it? |

Add hydrocodone and beer and it will be even better! |

dalderman, Back of the knee can be an ACL, you may want to have it checked out. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

how did you fall? I had a similar problem last summer with a 360 fall. Was terribly off axis and nose dived on the left side of my body and my left leg took the blow. The water blasted my lower leg backward while my body kept moving forward and ended up being unable to walk well for a while. I also could not straighten my leg, or bend it more than about 90 degrees or so.
My fall is pretty common with PCL sprains and tears. It also is common in car accidents when the leg contacts the dashboard and the body continues forward.
If you don't think you fell like me then it could be something else. I never had an MRI done but saw several people who thought I severely sretched/partially tore my PCL. My season was pretty much done after that because casing the wake, one wake jumps, flats landings, and toeside takeoffs all caused a lot of discomfort and re-aggravation.
Good luck, definitely give it some rest and if you still have limited ROM after a week see a doctor. _________________ Wake Forest University |

I have contant problems with my right knee and it's playing up again since I've been jumping, jumping, jumping because of the impact.
The ligaments down the back become tight and painful and it crunches around something chronic (have loose/floating cartilage) - so I hear ya.
The best thing can do is rest it, get some Volteran to release the muscles, rubs, ice etc. Try a knee support - I know mine helps.
Sadly once you've hurt a knee chances are it's always going to play up again. Once thing we all forget to do before going out is to stretch! Stretch out those muscles and ligaments warm it all up, get the range of motion in there and you'll be surprised at the difference it makes. _________________ Suck it up and get hardcore! |

I took a hard crash on a tantrum and felt something in knee. Then got into the boat and massaged my knee and then tried to stand and almost fell. My knee felt like it was going to snap. Turns out the next day I could barely walk and inside of my knee was super weak too. Went to doc, got MRI and found out I have a MCL sprain grade 2, out of wakeboarding for 4 weeks. I even wakeboarded 30 mins after I did this to my knee, so your mind can trick your body even when your hurt. I would just get it checked out if your still in any pain.
and yes, R.I.C.E is the best solution. |

as someone who has had 6 blown knees, it's either a acl or miniscus tear. it you bend your knee over your other leg and push towards your chest if the pain is in the back of the knee it's 99% miniscus but go see your doc _________________ Brian Gilbertson |
