What do you all think about wearing a helmet? Seems to me that it's a good idea, but I've heard issues about the chin strap. I make my kids (and myself, for that matter) wear helmets when skateboarding, snowboarding and riding bikes. I (and they) get clobbered pretty good on a regular basis and come into the boat with a decent headache.

Thoughts on wearing helmets? Good, Bad, Indifferent?

(the only reason I posted this on trick tips is that I figured those of you doing harder tricks would have more experience in this area).

Anyway - thanks in advance.

I wear a helmet not just to protect my noggin but also my eardrums. I have three friends, or friends of friends, who have blown out an eardrum while wakeboarding.

What about the chinstrap? When faceplanting properly Smile , do you get a decent pull from the chinstrap?

Just curious....

I've personally never had or heard of any problems due to the chinstrap. I'm also fairly limited in my experience or the difficulty of my tricks compared to many people on here but I have perfected the faceplant. Very Happy I can't imagine hitting much harder than I did last weekend after missing a w2w spin and catching my tip.

i wear one, never ride without it, but i hit sliders, and kicker, plus i have to at the cable, but if i didnt have to , i would probably wear it anyway. my chin strap gets loose, and it sucks, but i tighten right befor i do any inverts or things, that way it will protect me...i havnt had any issues with it coming off, unless its not tight that is, i like them though, a helmet sure saved my head when i hit it HARD on a slider, if i didnt have a helmet on, who knows what could have happened, i was lucky, all i got was a concussion, but ya, they do work

I just hit the wake, so I don't wear a helmet. I've gotten knocked around pretty good lots of times, but I just don't wear a helmet. Hell, I don't even wear one when I'm hitting sliders either, much less when I'm skateboarding and snowboarding. I guess I'm probably a bad influence on your kids Mr. Green

Yeah, the only time I would say wear a helmet on wake tricks is when you start doing some inverts and getting major air, cuz water isnt as soft as it looks.

Helmets may make riding more safe but they also make you look stupid while wakeboarding. So there's no way i'll wear a helmet wakeboardin.

Nope. Only time I'd ever wear a helmet would be when first hitting sliders.

Frankly, I'd feel a hell of a lot more uncomfortable with a big plastic casing on my head when charging the wake. I reckon you could get some injuries just from wearing the thing in a crash.

Kaizer, you dont wear them to look "cool" you wear them to protect your head, i would rather wear a helmet then have a massive head ache or what ever. But when your just hitting the wake there not necessary

Yeah a helmet isnt gonna do much if you and your kids are just kinda falling and faceplanting while doing small jumps and stuff like that. Most people where helmets when riding on sliders and kickers because of the chance of falling and hitting your head on them. I guess if you jump real high and come down on your head the helmet would help with the impact but it isnt neccessary for most wake tricks.

Definetly wear a helmet. Even if your just hitting the wake it makes more sense to not take a chance of getting hit in the head by the board. I never used to wear one and have numerous stitches in my head to show what can happen. Now that I wear one I feel safer and end up riding harder because I'm not afraid of getting hurt. Even if your just beginning don't take the chance. Head injuries will kill ya, but body injuries most of the time won't kill you, but may keep you down a few weeks or months.

What helmet brands/types do people wear? I am looking for one, and am not sure what to get.
