|
|
I need your guy's/gal's opinions here. My girlfriend who is new to boating, wants me to "name" my boat. I mean, painted name on the side with Port of Orgin. I tried to explain to her that you can "name" your ski boat, i.e. "the bitch", "great white", etc., but you don't paint the name on it. That excuse wasn't good enough for her, but I couldn't explain it other than, "It is just how it is".
Can anyone explain it better than my lame, but true, excuse? _________________ 1989 Supra Comp TS6M, 06 GLI for haulin'.

Sailboats get names, big boats with cabins get names, and some large runabouts get names. Ski/wake boats get no names because they aren't needed. We don't navigate large bodies of water where call name is needed to comunicate with aquatic authorities. Not to mention names are usually lame and forced on the boat because some woman told her man to do it. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

Dont name your boat, just tell your g/f that no one does it. Also, tell her to look out onto the lake and count how many wakeboarding/ski boats are named. Then that should be a good indicator right there that nobody names their boats and it is simply not done. _________________ "I knew those girls were pros, but don't tell Turtle, it'll break his heart." - Drama, Entourage |

Every company that releases a boat gives the boat a name. Its the model name. People just don't name their boats becuase there is no reason. When referring to my boat it seems to be ok when I just say boat, or Malibu. _________________ Pulling fat people out of the water is fun...I get to use my engine. |

If she's persistant on naming the boat, don't paint it on!!! Find a sign shop and have them custom cut the name. Understand, I DON'T APPROVE WITH NAMING WAKEBOATS!!! But if she cuts you off, what are you gonna do!!!??? _________________ SLIP IT ON AND RIDE IT! |

Naming is for ships that use radio's to communicate in navigable waterways, etc. and talking to bridges, coast guard, etc. Basically, what was said before. If you put a name on a wakeboard boat, you will look like a huge dork. Have your gf read this thread. Next she will be asking you can paint your name on the driver's side of your car, and her name on the passenger door car. _________________ Check out https://www.facebook.com/darcizzleoffshore |

For the same reason I don't name canoes, kayaks and row boats.
It's personal choice. Is it you girl friends boat or yours? Will you have the boat longer, or the girl friend? Does she also have vanity plates on the car?
Personally, I don't name small craft. Some do, some don't. _________________ I'm hung like Einstein,

Ask her if she would also like you to:
- Put a license plate on your bicycle?
- Name your house and put a sign on it?
- Put up a street sign to mark your driveway? "89comp Dr. Wy."?
- Wear a shirt with your name on it?
- Put a "Powered by Honda" sticker on your Honda?
- Name your car? And paint it on the trunk?
All stupid ideas, for sure. It's not necessary. Doing it is retarded. Period.
Also, tell her that if you do it, you're going to wear one of those Captain's hats all the time and that she will only be allowed to call you Captain, Sir, or Skipper. |

OK - Maybe we don't put the names on the boat - But how many of you have names for your boat? Personally I have two - depending on the situation. If we are riding it that day it is call "Lowrider" - Because it sits in the water. Which also gives it a great theme song. If we are meeting people on the lake we call it "The Ticket". Because it is our ticket to getting on better boats.
Sorry if that is GAY!! |

Nor*Cal has the right of it, also, it's somewhat traditional for a person to name a bigger boat like that whether they navigate larger bodies of water or not, and for owners of smaller boats to leave theirs unnamed. Tell her "TRADITION" - it's a big part of any kind of boating. Also, unless she's actually "the wife", I'm not sure that she should have that kind of say - I mean, come on, it's your boat that we're talking about. (Not sure that you should tell her that, though. ) |

| Tell her that none of the other kids are doing it, and if you show up with a name on your boat, they'll all make fun of you, steal your lunch money, and beat you up in the parking lot. Then say to her, "so shut the hell up and make me some dinner". You know. just so she doesn't think your a wuss.. |

Yeah, I'm all for the picture thing. I'd also defenitely avoid painting anything on your boat. It would be sort of like tatooing her name on your arm. After she's long gone and you still have your faithful boat, it'll just be a bad reminder. Why don't you just letter it in stickers so small no one can read them (and maybe put it low enough it sets down in the water): then you can continue to receive the "benefits" of having a girlfriend 'cause you listened to her, but you don't have to get laughed off of the lake. She may think you're just a smart ass, though and then you're screwed anyway.
My wife tried the same thing on our new boat and I just told her I'm not naming anything.........'course I'm married so I'm not getting any anyways! Good luck!! |

I've already posted a pic of my lady on the boards if you guys know where to look....
I guess I could paint the name on the bottom and then be like, "well when the boat goes to plane out people can see it and I wanted to add more weight to the boat in right area since I already have 600 lbs in the back..." _________________ 1989 Supra Comp TS6M, 06 GLI for haulin'.

One of the best threads I've read in a while. If t'was me, I'd agree to naming the boat and painting it on the hull but on the proviso that you get to choose the name. Then, come up with a really stupid name that she'll hate from the outset. Problem solved. _________________ Jeff |

You can call it whatever she wants as long as you don't paint it on the side. Make her give you a "favor" in order to name the boat. _________________ Calabria Boats Rule! |

Putting the name and home port on the back of a boat is known as documenting it - along with registering it with the US Coast Guard. In the US the boat has to be at least 5 net tons (usually 25 feet or longer) to document it. Of course that doesn't mean you can't paint a name on the back but to do it officially it has to be a big boat. So all you have to do is explain to her that you can't document a boat under 25 feet - end of discussion.
My friends documented their boat to avoid having to pay luxury tax and registration in California. Apparently it saved them quite a bit of money over 5 years even though the initial cost was several hundred dollars. But the downside was they kept getting pulled over by the Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol because they didn't see any registration stickers and didn't expect their boat (it's just 26 feet) to be documented. |

I agree with Mr. Blean.
Tell her you changed your mind, that you'd be happy to name it and that you've already scheduled an appointment to have it painted in a few days.
Then tell her you named it "insert ex-girlfriends name here", preferably one she knows. And explain to her that you chose "ex-girlfriends name" because your boat reminds you alot of her; you love ridin' in her (the boat) all day and she (the boat) gives you more pleasure than anything in the world.
It may be a little rough at first, but you won't have the naming discussion again! |

i grew up in Fla on the bay so all boats had names there, not knowing about this tradition of not naming wake board/ski boats. I named mine when I got it, but I still like it. the name is "playin' with my dingy" _________________ your not getting air till your arms are flapin' like a chicken |
