I cannot possibly fathom why these things are so much money! I mean actual cost is probably 50.00.

What's wrong with your current bimini Cory? I say get the Z-5 but I remember your facial expression when I told you how much the dealer wants (I paid half of that)

I'm not aware of any bimini that "tows well." Towing with the bimini up is like towing with boards in the racks IMO, there's no reason to do it... Just take the thing down when you're done for the day, then you don't have to worry about buying a new one.

The only one that does tow well that is well known is the Z-5 Cargo Rack due to it's one piece steel frame. Reason it does tow well is because it is a one piece solid frame that cannot collapse by design.

when i refer to bimini, i dont really mean that. i have a folding stock bimini now.

im refering to the solid frame one piece shades that the newer boats have. non folding and flat. i should have been more clear on that.

im after more shade, and a shade that doesnt look like it belongs to old people with a 80s bayliner or pontoon..... Laughing

Got mine for half of retail shipped to my office. Just gotta know how to search for what you're looking for and be somewhat patient. My dealer wanted $2,495 for the Z-5 after my boat purchase even though it's a $1,500 option. Then wanted tax and wanted to charge me the freight to the dealership Total would have been just a few dollars short of $3,000. Got mine shipped for $1,500 even but the deal I got was like catching lightning in a bottle...right phone call at the right time.

Materials cost more than that assuming you're using stainless tubing and sunbrella fabric. Then labor costs to build the frame and sew the fabric. I can't see these being less than $300 to make. $2500 for the Z5 is a bit spendy, I could probably get my dad's company to make that for about $1500-1750 retail.

I have the big air bimini and its a very strange shade. It comes in several dozen pieces making it adjustable a thousand different ways. All the clips are plastic and the frame is aluminium. It tows real nice but the frame work is visualy mind boggling.

Make it out of aluminum. Not a ton of material so you're not going to up the costs too much by purchasing an extra 20' length.

Clamps

true but then id have to pay to have it tig'ed. as were out of steel my buddy would do it for free.
add the material cost, welding cost, and shipping for alum. (steel i can buy locally) it just all points towards steel for the cheapest option.

yeah found those clamps today thanks.

buy looking at the clamps square tubing might be the easiest for mounting rather than round stock, although with round tube i could have curved corners, rather than square, sharp corners

You can bend square. If you don't go with aluminum go with stainless. Just have to get different wire and the polish the welds after the fact. Not that big of a deal and it looks great. Unless the tower is powdercoated, then I'd look into powercoating the bimini.
