I'm looking at the wake model winch from ridiculous winches. I live in pompano, Florida. All the lakes around here are pretty crappy and small, but I do have the beach to go to. Would getting a winch be worth it? How much wooils that model winch weigh? And would building a suitable rail cost alot?

bridges, don't you think winching would be a good way of getting some quality riding in? I think its more reasonable than driving 2-3 hours to a cable park everytime he wants to wakeboard.
isuckatwakin, I've never winched but it seems like it would be a blast. And if its the only way you can wakeboard why not get one. But like bridges said, I don't know how a 14 year old kid has $1700 to spend on a winch but if you do, go for it!

Im sure if he is 14 and wakeboards his parents are helping him pay the wakeboard bills. A 2,000 dollar winch is a great thing to have compared to a 60,000 boat. Winching small little ponds with friends all day can be so much fun.

buy a winch!

5 dollars to ride all day behind the winch your actually gonna get more time on the water then paying 20 dollars for a 20minute set behind a boat. If i was a 14 year old kid I would love to go get a winch and go winching all day with friends. Hes gonna learn so much board control riding behind a winch all day.

Hey everybody, the closest place to go on my boat takes an hour and a half to drive ro on weekends, and me and my friends would split the winch coat 4 ways.

Get a winch....you'll be glad you did. Lake was terribly windblown yesterday, so we hit the rail with our winch all day. Had a blast and used less than 3 gallons of gas.

Definitely disregard bridges, he sounds old and bitter. A winch was one of the most fun investments I've made and I only wish I had something like it when I was younger. It's WAY easier to organize a crew for winching than for boating since you only need 2, one to ride and one to run the winch. There's usually less drive-time to your riding spot, cheaper cost of operation, no loading/unloading at the boat ramp, you can ride anywhere, make your riding more creative (even if you're just a beginner). You can ride an entire day for less than it costs to buy lunch.

Get it & shred it.

Be sure to take good care of it, clean it often, and add some WD-40 to moving parts every once in a while to keep her pullin' strong for a long time.

The cost of building a rail can vary quite a bit depending on the situation. If you need to make it removeable, how deep the water is where you're putting it, if you have any tools/materials already. It can be done fairly cheaply, but it'd be best to cross that bridge when you come to it.

bridges, I don't think it's a coincidence that a few different people found your original post to be confrontational/negative. That's actually how I read it as well.

If he's only 14 it might be difficult to get his parents to pull the boat a few hours every weekend to the lake. Where as if he has a friend with a truck, they could go winching pretty often. Just my two cents.

Na, not yet. and my dad has this weird thaught that things like motors and mechanical stuff shouldnt be bought used... we couldve got a much bigger boat if it was a couple of years older. if i could get something used it would have to be local.

thereal bridges, good advice. Also, isuckatwakin if you get bored, just spend some time on google and/or bing maps satellite views and look for little canals/streams. It can take some time, but you might find a spot you never new existed.

I've ridden boats and cables and even been pulled across a pond by my truck, but I've never ridden a winch. I really want to though. Its on my list. Cool

ya for sure, best thing is after it rains alot just drive around till u find a spot and ur good to go. but watch out for ditches and stuff cuz they sometimes have glass bottles that are broke other old crap thrown in them so walk it with some old shoes on before u just jump on ur board and go.. there shud be a ton of places in florida, that is unless u live in a neighborhood or city part of florida then u might be screwed..

find a dock and set it up on the dock or the shore or something like that. just kinda be creative.. also if u dont have the $$$ to build a rail u can get one of those old kayaks with the plastic bottom and grind on that mother.. i plan on trying that one out with the kayak and i think it will work fine.. just tie a couple ropes on it with a anchor or something so it wont move when u hit it..

go on youtube and type in wakeboard winching or something like that and watch those videos and that will give u an idea of what u need to do and were to go..

the problem with getting a rail is that i would have to get a portable one, or one id hhave to put on the shore.

ya thats why i said try the kayak thing lol i saw a couple youtube videos of some pros winching hitting a kayak that was leaned up against something.. go ivest 40 bucks in an old plastic kayak and have u some fun lol

like this but make sure to take screws out of the bottom if there is any...
the yellow one in the middle... u cud even take a grinder and grind down that small piece of plastic in the front in back to make it all one surface..

You wouldn't get that good of a slide out of a kayak. You need something at least 20ft long. Can you ollie well? If so, a small flatbar is the easiest to build and one of the most fun things to hit. How deep is the water you plan on using it in?

A friend built one that we take to the beach on flat days that we can install in 10 or 15 minutes and it easily goes on the roof of an SUV or truck bed when we're done. I'll try to get some plans up. The rail he built is kind of expensive I think but it was built to last for a long time.

ya I was just sayin get the kayak so u cud learn on and get the feel for it and u cud take that kayak to ditches and stuff like that when u winch. but it's all up to. I'm sure u cud find something laying around to hit. a rail that is Laughing

Hey man,

I have a Ridiculous Winch and it is honestly the best winch I have ever seen/ridden behind. A solid investment for sure!
