So I injured my ankle last week riding motorcycles in the desert. It is not broken, but definitely sprained and bruised.
Anyone have recommendations on how to treat it? I have tried to rest it, but it seems to hurt more when I don't put any pressure on it. When I walk around it feels like it loosens up and gets better. Not sure what to do. Dr. said rest it.
Any opinions?

unless Dr. is the nickname of a buddy of yours, I vote to rest it ...
**edit - the rest disappeared**
i have crap for ankles and my doc always suggests to move it but don't overdo it, do what ever you feel comfortable with.

| ICE, ICE, AND MORE ICE... only way man.. get you a bucket of cold water add lots of ice in the ankle goes for 15 minutes.. sucks real bad at first i mean real bad but it will help.. take it out for 5-10 minutes stick it back in for another 15 minutes.. do this a couple times a day till swelling and pain go away and it will heel alot faster.. ur not going to want to do it but only way it will heel faster.. i have terrible ankles, i have prolly rolled them each around 20 times or more sucks, i wear a ankle brace all the time now.. but u gotta ice it to get it better... get ur phone and play a game or watch some tv while ur doing it to take ur mind off of it cuz it doesnt feel real good until it goes numb after about 5 minutes in there but it helps a ton just gotta keep at it everyday..

RICE and crutches for a weeks, and a boot if you have access to one. And whenever you think you are good to go, wait another 2 weeks.

I hope your joking but JIC.
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
I have jacked up my ankles sooo many times running.
Ice is the best thing now, althought it will make it feel tight, it gets the swelling out so that blood can get in and start to heal things. I take Ibuprofen 3x a day and I wrap it any time I'm on my feet with a compression wrap made for ankles. It has a loop that you slip onto the middle of your foot and a band that goes up around your ankle for support and compression. DONT leave it wrapped at night.
Once the swelling and discoloration goes away, you can start to switch between ice and heat for five min at a time always starting and ending on ICE.
Once it loosens up to where you can walk without making it swell or causing too much pain, only wear the wrap when you are doing something you are likely to get injured. This will keep you from getting weakness that will make it more likely to get injured, and eventually you want to completely wean yourself off of it.
Treat it well now and you will have less problems later.
Dave

| No I'm completely serious. I thought eating rice would make it swell more. I mean if you feed it to seagulls, they explode.

| once u roll, sprain, tweak an ankle it's always gunna bother u no matter what not saying it's gunna hurt all the time but saying once u roll it once more than likely u will roll it again it sucks sometimes I can't even just walk without rolling or twisting my ankle it sucks.. but I have played lots and lots sports and put it threw hell so I guess it repays me back by rolling or twisting easily I wear a ankle brace all the time.. but ice is ur best friend for now. get u a good ankle brave if u have to do stuff while it's still swore.. not no crappy one u have to invest in a good one.. if ur doing real hard physical things get u one that laces up so u can make sure it's tight..

Looks like we've caught a late night drunk poster . I wasn't giving advice from a doctors POV moreso than my personal experience POV. Had a grade 2 ankle sprain (2 torn ligaments) in high school playing baseball and I was in a boot and on crutches for 6 weeks. My ankle wasn't the same 3 years or so after, especially with wakeboarding. It is why I haven't worn a boot besides the highbacks, 3DS, atlas since then. They were the most ankle supportive boot out there. Now my ankles are perfect but my knees are shot because of wearing booting with such high ankle support, so now I'm in the Parks boots lol. It's a viscious $500 a pop circle

Thanks for all the feed back. I have done more ice and elevation, and it feels much better today. I made the mistake of not icing it enough the first week (since it happened on Easter Sunday), but I think I will be fine. I don't think I tore anything, since I can walk and run on it.
Hopefully it was just a bad bruise....
