Paul Apyan Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar

Paul Apyan

July 9, 2009

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss men's golfer Paul Apyan was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar, announced Thursday afternoon by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

A total of 108 players in Division I, 37 in Division II and 11 in NAIA earned the honor.

Apyan, a Chattanooga, Tenn., native is a four-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, as well as earning Dean's List and Athletic Director Honor Roll on several occasions. In 2007, Apyan was awarded the C-USA Academic Medal.

The redshirt junior has played in 84 rounds over his career and has averaged 74.4 strokes per round. During the 2008-09 campaign, Apyan averaged 74.2 strokes per round and enjoyed his best finish of the year in the season opener at the Aldila Intercollegiate in his hometown of Chattanooga.

Last season, Apyan tallied a third-place tie in the Conference USA Championship to earn all-tournament honors.

This is the third postseason honor for Apyan, having earned the Southern Miss Male Athlete of the Year Award, as was as the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award.

haugy, Thank you sir. Not too bad for a public school Tennessean huh? Is Nashville as split around public and private high schools as Chattanooga? The greatest thing is the 3 Academic All-Americans from Chattanooga all went to public schools... point us

ontrider, I'm doubting a yes answer

So how did everyone fare?

09 has certainly had its ups and downs, but I managed to achieve most of what I set out to. I definitely did some growing up as well.

1. Try to stay organized and on top of schoolwork, last term has motivated me to really apply myself.
2. Score above 165 on the LSAT
3. Apply to lawschools and hopefully get into a top 10 program, IE: Cal.
4. Try to not spend so much time analyzing the past, and trying to figure out irrationality.
5. Not get so caught up in my professional aspirations that I forget about appreciating the present.
6. Start running again, get back down to a steady 175lbs or so (I'm hoping I can accomplish this because I only weigh 185 right now.)
7. No babbys.

1. Check, new goal is to finish out college with a 3.8GPA, I'm pretty close and just have two easy terms left that should be easy to bang out.

2. Fail, applying to schools anyways. If need be I'll take a year off and retake in September.

3. Fail, still haven't gotten my applications in. This is probably the fail that is most disappointing, because it was totally in my control but the reality of 6 figure debt, especially going into a saturated legal field makes me nervous. I'd be lying if I didn't say that I think I subconsciously sabotaged myself here.

4. Success, her and I are finally done for good.

5. Doing better at this, but I'm still pretty focused on school right now.

6. Success and then fail, I am picking it back up again though.

7. None that I am aware of.

I am a bit disappointed that I didn't post any goals for '09, it would have been nice to look back and see if I accomplished them....

But....I am sure I would have listed continue to be smoke/tobacco free. Last year at this time I was 6 months(ish) tobacco free.... I made it a solid 16 months, I still do not chew or smoke cigarettes, both of which had a firm hold on me. I have taken up cigar smoking.... Confused

Completed a few triathlons & the Tour of Park City bike ride....that was pretty cool.

I love my wife, my kids are healthy and all of my immediate family made it through the year without issue....that is a win in my book.

My roommate and a bunch of buddies went to law school. I opted out because I couldn't figure out if I truly wanted to practice law. In reality I wouldn't want to do insurance defense, plantiff (slip/fall), criminal or any of those general areas. I found my niche and am a lobbyist making more than all of them, I will partner sooner and I don't have 6 figures of loans. That being said I was paid $hit for 4 years to get here. As they all say to prospective law students, make sure you TRULY want to practice law and are willing to make mortgage payments on those loans for 30 years. I think you made a good decision waiting. A good percentage of those who passed the CA Bar this year do not have jobs still.
