wetsuits

Just wanted to see what everyone sports as far as a wetsuit during the "winter" down south. I started boarding this year and still trunked it my last time out which was about 2.5 weeks ago. I'm planning on going out this weekend (Lake Austin) but am thinking the water may be a tad nipply. I want to get something that will be pretty versitle and take me from now until the spring. I just don't know what that is....

I would recommend a dry suit if you plan to wake in cold weather

ask around the area to see if others have full suits or shorty's or just spring tops.. Jet pilot and o'neill make good stuff

Yeah, I don't think it gets cold enough down here to need a dry suit.

I talked to a couple of people and I think that a shorty with the long sleeves should take me until spring, then a heater top after that for a little while. The water on Lake Austin comes from the bottom of Lake Travis so it's a little cooler. I just don't want to get something and it not be warm enough but at the same time don't want to get something too thick and bulky.

shortys look goofy. Id get a nice thick (3.5mm) heater shirt and it is about as warm as a normal 2/1 shorty. If thats not warm enough, 3/2 suit is nice for just about anything.

I am a fan of spring suits with long sleeves, they don't mess up the flexibility of your knees at all but keeps all your upper body warm.

Long sleeve spring is the way to go! Protection for the "boys", warmth for your core and the sleeves keep the wind off. So much better than a heater shirt and just wear your shorts to prevent looking goofy.

If you decide to go up to a fullsuit I'd recommend either an O'neill or a Rip Curl, they make the best in the business. A 3/2 is a standard fullsuit thickness and should be plenty. I'm not sure how cold your water gets but a good fullsuit is amazing. I like to wear a fullsuit in the fall/spring as that is when I usually am trying hard to learn new tricks.

I tried out someones long sleeve spring suit this past weekend and it was plenty warm. Pretty sure that is the way to go...with shorts of course. The bad thing is I also dislocated my shoulder and spent a few hours in the ER. I've never had anything like that happen to me. I'm going in to see a ortho today to see how bad it is. All I know is that it hurt....alot. Hopefully it's not too bad and I can still get some riding in. I really wanted to progress over the winter months.

I have a 2mm heater shirt that I wear in the early fall, a 2mm long sleeved shorty that I wear until late November, and a 3/2 fullsuit that I'll be wearing until the spring. Surface temps here generally hover around 48-52 during the coldest part of the "winter".

I would rock a 3/2 full suit. Shorties look goony, plus nothing looks or feels better than riding a full with no shorts or vest. I wouldnt worry about a full suit being too restrictive. I think that Oneil Gurus are extremely stretching and comfortable, as well as Excel suits.
