How much air what is the best trick you guys can do behind I/O boats. Post some pics if you have them. I just started boarding and keep thinking to progress i would have to get an inboard. But my boat is almost paid off and i would hate to get into a payment for a little bit. I sometimes get discouraged thinking i can`t really progress and get big air or get hard tricks behind an I/O. I`m sure others have felt this way... Lets have some encouragement.
i've seen people get huge air behind my Rinker 21'
It makes a great wake from the factory.
Like i said, huge air has been seen behind plenty of IOs. _________________ Need riders in the Fort Collins, CO Area!
the difference between an I/O and an I is probably not something any novice riding would notice.
I ride on an I/O and just really got into boarding this year. I jump a little over 5 feet up and clear the wake at it's largest point, about 15 feet wide give or take. I'll try to get some video this friday. Just need to see if there's no wind. I ride behind a 95 glascon 180 I/O with NO tower(60 foot rope) and still achieve these jumps. With a tower and a little more ballast weight I would be able to do much better I think. Once I grow a pair of balls of course.
Just put some weight in the front(400lbs does it for my boat) and trim er up 1/4. You'll see a huge difference in the wake. Not enough weight will make the boat start bouncing though.
Ya i also ride behind a I/O and the wake isnt horrible. Its not a V drive wakeboard boat wake but it is good for a I/O. The biggest problem i have with my I/O is holding speed. Having cruise control would be amazing. Its constant playing with the throttle. _________________
We also have an I/O and its not bad at all. We load it down with about 1700lbs ballast and it does pretty respectable. We have Perfect Pass Stargazer and a 4 blade Stainless 18 pitch and im accurate within .10 to .20 of the set speed. Usually its dead on, just depends on water conditions.
I thought that an I/O was holding me back too at one point and then you realize you can get good air and good moves in with an I/O just like anything else. I have ridden behind my buddy's Nautique, anothers Supra, and another friends Tige' and was not intimidated feeling and was comfortable with their wakes as they felt pretty familiar. My buddy that owns the Nautique rode with us a while back and was pullin tricks without issues.
This is a pic of me with about 6 ppl, ballast not filled that day because we were running out of time. Water was pretty rough so I think trim was only about 1/4.

Yup, I was getting ready for flight...
Nah, sunglasses, that float
They have vents on top and bottom so air gets through and never fogs them...wouldn't trade them for anything...may look goofy but serve a purpose and work well _________________ How much work would a network work if a network could network?
What brand are the glasses!Where can you get them? I can't stand being in the sun without them and I ride a lot of sunset sets! Thanks _________________ Just trying to find my piece of the pie!
They are Birdz Sunglasses

Mine are the Seahawk sunglasses. You dont realize how much the vents help until it immediatly de-fogs them, as compared to regular glasses with a floater wraparound. _________________ How much work would a network work if a network could network?
Don't discount I/Os. I learned up to a whirly-bird behind one. Since then, behind my dad's outboard bayliner, I have landed Whirl-5s, several 7 vaiations, mobes--pretty much everything I can do.
Thanks for the replies guys, makes me feel a little better. I just need to get the right technique down (developed bad habits). I wish there were more people i could ride with here that were really expierenced i could go out with to learn the right way. Just seems like you hear so many people say you need a inboard to ride well lol. I guess i kind of bit that hook, line and sinker.Keep the pics and stories coming i`m sure i`m not the only one that feels this way.

Ive had plenty of friends get a pull behind my boat who own or ride behind Nautiques and Malibus and Tiges, and the wake is pretty much the same, maybe a bit more "curly" at the top as opposed to crisp.
I dont see anything holding me back from progressing except ME
Here a decent vid of the wake, my wife riding. Only 3 people in the boat and her on the rope. No ballast at all. There are some closeups of the wake, especially around the 2:50 or so mark.

I had a Tahoe Q7 with 2x440lb fat sacs. The wake was excellent. The only limiting difference, is that at 22MHP you needed to ride at ~ 55'. (vs some modern wake specific boats whos hull can form a cleaner wake that pushes back 65'-75' plus.)
The other difference that I found is that the wake is not as steep. This would probably make some of the trip flip tricks more difficult.
I didn't even read the thread but it's going to depend completely on your I/O... some have decent wakes others have horrible wakes (like my old, old one)

We've had an '89 Arriva with Mercruiser Alpha One IO for 15 years and wakeboarded off it the whole time. I've had a lot of fun with it, would probably get even more air if we put ballast in. We just sold it, looking to upgrade to something (TBD) but most likely V-drive with ballast tanks for a bit more wake than we've had in the past.

This is about as invert as I get right now... maybe I'll get further with a bigger wake?
I had a Glason 180 with a Merc 4.3L for quite a few years. We had 1000 lbs ofballast and the wake was decent..... Until 2 years ago when I sold it and bought a Moomba XLV with 2k in ballast and PP. My riding along with my friends has progressed a lot more over the last 2 seasons then 4 years on my old boat. I could do a tantrum on my i/o but couldn't even go toe side w2w (not that it's the boat's fault)
I/O's are great for what they are but I personally found a Vdrive to give a much more consistent pull with a more consistent wake which has made learning a lot easier. _________________ 2010 Watson Hybrid

You can definitely get air behind an I/O. I bought my '86 Glassport in college, back in '05. I just sold it this past summer when I bought my Supra. My I/O was only 16.5' but we'd put ballast in it and I made a tower for it. The 4 cylinder Chevy engine hated it but she was a soldier and would put up with alot of weight and people. I think the biggest disadvantage to the I/O's is that alot of people develop bad habits behind them, because they'll charge the hell out of the wake in an attempt to get bigger air or go further. Don't discount proper technique. I got behind a friends Supra 21v after learning behind my boat, charged the wake and got wrecked. Inboards are definitely a more consistent pull, and of course the wakes are larger, but all the guys you see riding pro now learned behind old direct drives and I/O's.
There is a good video out there, that was on the "Bonus" section of Pre Pop, with alot of Pro's in a throwback competition behind a Mastercraft 190 with strap on bindings. I can't seem to find it on the web but they've shown it on FuelTV several times as well. _________________ '05 Supra Launch 24SSV
A friend with his 24 Ebbtide with a Volvo 245hp and some sacs and people.
He has always had I/O and all tricks he has, he learned with an I/O.
There are hundreds of I/Os out there and each one has a diferent wake, and thousands of I/O riders. The boat is not everything, so keep it up!
