So I finally took a huck at a hs backroll and can't believe how natural it came to me. Now that I've got about 20 attempts under my belt I feel confident in my rotation and pop. The problem is I'm almost overrotating. I'm landing and the board automatically either slides out the front or shoots out heelside. What do I do to stop the rotation right when I'm coming down??

Gettin my first invert has made me totally obessed with boardin all over again. I was just starting to get stagnant.

It's all about where you hold the rope. If you feel yourself under-rotating you pull the handle in tight to your waist. If you feel like you're over-rotating let the hand out to the side or out front. Generally you want to keep it toward your lead hip but if you're over-rotating you can raise it to your lead shoulder.

Wakebrad, I see what you mean. I noticed when I tucked the handle in tight is when I rotated really fast and the more I pushed the handle out the more it slowed me down. I guess I just need to start focusing on pushing the handle towards my right hip.

Well, it sounds like we don't have the same problem. I'm rotating slowly, and tucking my knees some to speed it up. I only tried I think 6 times yesterday, and a couple more about a month ago. I have a video, but vimeo is still processing it. I'll post up once it completes. I have a short attention span when it comes to learning new tricks. Instead of doing it over and over, I just come out and try again later.

I just got out there and just hucked the first attempt and almost landed it. I was so hyped that I didn't die and that I actually made the rotation that I just started poundin myself try after try. I would get up wait for speed then go for it. I'm definitely payin the price today though. My legs feel like someone tied me naked to a chair and beat my thighs with a wiffle ball bat. Shocked

Alright, the previous times I tried this, I did a real strong load and release which got the rotation, but not the height I needed. In this video, I'm trying to wait for the pop before I lead with my head into the flip, but I'm much slower on the rotation. To compensate, I'm picking my knees up like I would for a grab. It's hard to tell in the video where I have the handle, but the best I can tell, my elbows at least are staying down. I might still be letting the handle up which is slowing me down. What do you think?

Christobull, It seems like your not looking in the right direction off the lip, thus making it alot harder for you to release the line into a rotation. With HS backrolls its important to load the line and ride your board edged up the wake( just like in your video) but the direction your throwing your upper torsoe is slowing your spin. You want to look down into your rear shoulder almost as if to do a front flip but combined with the line tension it will naturally take you around. Right now your fighting against the spin right off the lip. All of your pop will come by stomping your feet into the wake, but the direction you lead with your head is going to determine all your spin. It's a really weird feeling to get used to but it worked for me. Give it a try and let me know how it goes, or post some video! Cool

curtblanchette, alright, so you're saying, instead of trying to flip sideways like I would on a trampoline, I should tuck down? Like in the direction of my back binding?

This is what Kyle from Learnwake told me. I think surely I'll get it next time out.

"The one thing you are missing is the Frontside turn through the wakes. You are going too much straight over instead of around. As soon as you start to ride up the bottom of the wake start turning your shoulders and your head to the left. Not after you ride up, as you ride up turn. This will fix the hang up in your rotation. The flip is not supposed to go straight over your head. The board and rotation should travel around the back more.

Your edge technique and everything is pretty good, keep that the same. But your shoulders have to turn, just like you are finishing a perfect Tiger Woods Golf shot (right handed golf swing finish, hopefully you play golf or can visualize it.) as you ride through the wake.

Try this...Before your next attempt, stand next to the wake on the outside and look over your lead (left) shoulder by turning your head to the left away from the boat and try to find a cloud in the sky behind you and up. Then take your set up, edge in and try to find that cloud as you ride up and through the wakes. If you add more turn you till definitely land it. On your 3rd attempt you demonstrated more turn then all the rest and you came the closest to proper rotation on this attempt."

Well there's nothing I can say to discredit anyone from learnwake obviously mr mathis Laughing . I found looking into my rear shoulder helped me mentally. What kyle is saying is obviously right but i think you'll get the same result either way. So give it a shot

Well, I'd have to actually see you do one to know for sure, but looking at the two responses, it sounds like you're doing more of a mexican backroll. I'm trying the progressive right now, but I have no doubt that what you're suggesting would also get me into a backroll rotation.

Baker0788, dude, that's exactly why I only give it so many attempts in one session. The very first one on that video was the worst way to fall because you can't roll into it or anything, but I lucked out and my front foot slipped right out, so I didn't get the whiplash at least. It was starting to hurt my knee again though. I've got a little waddle in my step from it now. lol

do what the learnwake guy said, you definatley look up and over your lead shoulder, looking down at your rear shoulder makes no sense for a heelside backroll. Confused
