Yeah you can it will seem sluggish and slow, ride a bit faster or it will sink. I'm 220 and rode my brothers 138 and that's how it was......too small, get a 141

x2

Simple answer is yes, but it will make you want to go faster to keep it on plane. I ride a 143 and I'm 6'3" 170-175lbs. I can ride a 136. It's a different feel on the water, but I prefer a larger board. A 138 is only a small difference, but is much better suited to you. Just remember that all manufactures and individual boards differ to an extent, and in the end, it's more about personal preference rather than a strict size range.

With a smaller board you can get more pop since you can edge harder (at the cable). How its at the boat, no clue...

I'm 6'1" 165 and I ride a 136 Hyperlite Premier. The board I had before it was a CWB that I got used for like $50 and it was a 147, it was WAY too big, it made it hard to edge and there was a lot more edge to catch.

Cable or no, a smaller board will edge harder and give you more pop, but too small and you lose speed which will make it hard to take your tricks out in the flats, and you'll probably catch an edge easier since you're naturally sitting further down in the water.

Cool! That means I got a good one! It is the 07 model and I tried it out over the weekend. I am a total newbie and have no clue what I am doing, but I did surf for around 10 years in my teens when I lived at the beach in SoCal. I live 15 miles from a small lake in my city, 30 miles from 4 very large lakes so I will be getting better as I move forward. Any tips Chris?

thunderman, need help on anything in particular? If not, just have fun. Get The Book. Watch The Book. Live The Book. And video all your falls and post them on here. Laughing

But seriously, these guys can help you out. They help me a lot.

What do I work on first? I can get up and go outside of the wake, but what do I do when I get out there? Is my first step to be able to go across the wake successfully without eating it?

That's one way of putting it. lol You probably want to back up a little, and slow the boat down some. Work on doing a surface 180 behind the boat by bending your knees and moving the handle across your body. It helps to get used to the way it feels to break your fins loose, and also traveling with your opposite foot forward. Then move outside the wake, and work on edging hard out then drifting back in on the same side for a while, then cross over to the other and do the same thing. When you feel comfortable, cut across the wakes slowly, but smoothly. Get to where you don't slow down when you hit them, and just absorb the wake with your knees. Keep working on edging until you feel comfortable crossing the wakes with good speed, then you could work on any number of things from there. Butterslides, ollies, wake jumps, whatever. If you move to wake jumps, it's easier to jump inside out first and then move to a one wake jump in, then both. There are plenty of feeds on that, just do some searching.

WOW! Great advice! What speed should my wife shoot for? We were doing 20mph the other day.

By the way, do you boat at Eufala?

Anything between 15 and 20 is probably a good place to start. The more comfortable you get, the faster you'll feel like going. I ride between 19 and 22 depending on what I want to work on. I normally go to Tenkiller, but I will be riding at Eufaula this Sunday after the wakeboarding finals.

You are going to want to ride at the low side on speed while learning edging, and slides. Speed up gradually as you get more control of your edges.

Also, get The Book. Get Volumes 1 and 2. They will keep you busy for awhile.
