Good strategy for getting entry level people into a more expensive bike. As a side note, I LOL'd at the language that now has to be put in.

I don't think I'd ride an HD for free, the whole "I'm in my mid 50's and looking for a way to get back to my badass teenage years" message just doesn't really speak to me. (No offense to any HD riders/owners out there.) I'd just much rather have a Ducati, Triumph, or BMW...

It doesn't speak to me either, but I'm trying to choose a bike based on what I like, not what hte image is. I HATE the harley image. At least the iron and nightster are not all chromed out. I f'ing HATE chrome.

Yep.
I don't know about this. It's just forcing customers to buy and turn around and buy more. While this will be good to move metal, it's going to suck for us looking for a low cost used one. If used ones from stores are fetching almost full price, private owners will be able to raise their prices. This will hurt HD in the long run. But probably not since the sheep follow this brand like methheads to sudafed.

Yes. BUT, consider this: say I want a Super Glide or a Crossbones. If I buy a sporty with no money down, the payments I make over the year are like putitng money into a two wheeled savings account that I can ride. Granted, I cna't use that money for anything else....

I'm in the I can't stand Hardly Davidson's. I'm old school when it comes to purchases. If I want a motorcycle for iron butt travel, I'll take a Moto Guzzi. If I want one for speed and corners, I'll take a Ducati. Coolness factor; old Moto Guzzi or Triumph
I don't want a bike I ride for 1 hour and spend 3 hours repairing and 4 hours washing and waxing.

lcap, FWIU the newer models are better in this dept, but the tech is still decades old.
If I went a distance for a commute, I'd want a nice modern FI'ed standard or tourer.

Actually, "hardley davidson" refers to sportsters, which are called such because they are the smallest of the bunch.
The harley badge suffered greatly under AMF. But they are not owned by AMF any longer. Reliability is greatly improved.
so, Lcap, what bike are you riding now?

Every harley is fuel injected now, and have been for quite some time. Unlike Triumph, who only went to FI as standard this year. So that's a bit counter to the reputations, eh?
I'm going to test ride again saturday. Thing is, I probably wont' buy. I like my old rat too much, although I think I need to change the bars for soemthing with a different stretch. I'm getting a very bad cramp in my left shoulder blade. It becomes almost unbearable after a few hours.
Probably riding to wakestock to see Social Distortion in August in ONtario. Maybe I'll get to meet some of you there.

I was talking to a guy from one of the local dealers about this program the other night. He was laughing and said, this way in six months when you are sick of being laughed at on your sportster you can step up to a real bike and not be out much money.  His words, not mine, not that I really disagree. Although I have seen a couple pretty nice looking sportys running around lately.

cameraboy, I see you've been doing your homework, not many people know about the HD AMF thing.
As far as reliability goes. I have not had one single issue with my bike in three years of ownership. I recently just got back from a trip that I put on over 1000 miles in three days with no problems.

I love my 848. Had it for a year, no problems. Most rides have been between my house and the office. Only put maybe 1,500 miles of pleasure riding on it.
Rides track great. Fried the clutch breaking in the bike (riding a bit heavy) and the dealership replaced the plates no questions asked. Even hauled the bike back to my house which is about an hour away.
It's a pasta rocket. It goes fast, breaks fast, does everything fast. If I didn't like it this way, I wouldn't by Italian streetbikes and Austrian dirtbikes.

Yea. And the idea that there's no "modern" technology on a harley is also false. But it seems to be an image that, for whatever reason, Harley keeps perpetuating and their core customers want to believe. I mean, look at the Vrod. It's a great bike with a porsche designed, liquid cooled engine. And harley riders hate it. I would buy one if the riding position was not analagous to torture. Which pisses me off. yea, AMF pretty much destroyed harley. But fortunately, the reliability issues and the leaking issues seem to have been fixed. And seriously, my 81 yamaha has an oil filter system that they know is going to leak. I know that they know it's going to leak because part of the system includes a small channel that diverts leaking oil out and away from the hot pipes. And my starter is faulty. And they knew it and kept letting bikes with this faulty starter roll off the assembly line for 3 years. So at least one Jap company has it's design issues too.

That's cool. My friend TeeJay, who is the coolest chick I know and the f'ing REAL DEAL just got done doing 1600 miles through canada on a Super Glide without a single issue.
However, honestly, the bikes don't seem to feel very comfortable to me. idk. It's something to think over though.

The word free and Harley don't go together. Those capitalist pigs won't do any thing unless they are making money. That being said they are extremly reliable with the exception of the 110" CVO motors.

cameraboy, the key word in my post was "modern". And yes, V-Rod aside, their motors are tried and true but seriously out of date considering the price.
For 10k++ I expect BMW or Ducati level equipment.
And when I think "Triumph" I don't think of modern FI bikes, although the Speed Triple is quickly erasing that thought from my brain.
As for your cramping, are you relaxed when riding, or do you find yourself riding rigid? How far down are you reaching to grab your bars?

I have a different take on it. With Harley offering essentially free new bikes the demand for used harleys will drop initially as buyers, who would normally buy used, will buy these new "free" HDs. This will create a surplus of used harleys and prices will drop. Then in a year when they trade in those bikes and put them on the market there will be increased supply for used bikes again driving down costs. I would say this is bad if you currently own a Harley and are planning on selling it.
This is a pretty smart move by HD. Everyone expects the economy to pick up in the next year so this is playing to the people who are planning on buying one once the economy picks up. This will get HD some purchases before that occurs and after.
I don't have anything against HD, I just have no desire to buy a new bike. Still love mine as much as when I first bought it.

I'm pretty relaxed, at least consciously so. The reach is not much of a reach. I think that might be the problem. It's a short reach, with arms relatively close together, with forearms about at a 90 degree angle to the ground.

That is actually the preferred position - let your hands just rest on the bars without any weight behind them.
What is your sleeve length? 34?
I ask because it almost sounds like your bars need to move forward... or you need to try to slide back in the saddle a bit (if even possible).

Well, I bought a silver Iron 883. I know, I hate the harley image, but I just really liked the bike when I test rode it. I got the bike for around a grand below MSRP (INCLUDING prep, freight, etc.), but without the "ride free guarentee."
The price was too good to pass up. I didn't buy from the dealer who let me ride it though. He wouldn't move on the price and was pretty arrogant and dismissive. So I took his best offer, emailed every HD dealer within 150 miles, and spent the afternoon letting each one make a play for my business. 4 never returned my email at all, 3 said they didn't want to deal and the MSRP was the firm price, but three were willing to play ball. In the end, I got the bike from a dealer 75 miles away because I liked the price, but just as important, I liked the way they treated me.
I think these intertubes are a good idea for consumers, given that Harley doesn't confine it's dealers to selling on only "in territory" the way the big 3 boat dealers do.

Harley gets a bad rap for sure. I've been commuting on my bike for years. I own a 2001 FXST (softail). I've never had to do any repairs (knock on wood) and have 32k miles on it.
I'd have a lot more miles but I haven't ridden it for pleasure in years. It's just riding to work and back these days. Since I'm not into getting leathered up to ride with a bunch of dudes and I ride it so much already getting on it and riding for the sake of riding doesn't sound as exciting as say wakeboarding!
EDIT: before my softail I owned an 89 Sportster and sold it with about 35k miles on it still going strong.

That's from the old school mentality. Stock harley pipes are actually pretty subdued. People spend time and money to make their harleys loud like that.
Idk... I don't fit the "harley persona" at all. I don't own a stich of leather riding gear, I wear armored textile pants and jacket, I ride rain or shine every day, I don't have a beer gut or a beard. (shoot, I do have a lot of tattoos though...) I also hate chrome and shiny bikes.
eh, whatever. I'm psyched about the bike and I pick it up tomorrow night.

Ok, that is a damn good looking bike right there. Ditch the chrome pipes and black'em out. Then it would look fully sick.

They all look and sound the same to me. If it's loud, I hate it. And most people that own these think that when they leave the stop sign at the intersection 1/2 a block from my house, that they have to take off as fast as possible. Rednecks with beat up trucks and glasspacks do the same, so they fit in the same category.
I ride a sportbike, and I also hate the other sportbike riders that think they're on a 2 stroke and feel like they have to constantly rev it up when the clutch is engaged.
